Let's see; I can pay you $50 bucks plus shipping and get a used Tivo and then sign up for a year's service and pay $19.95 a month or I can call Tivo and get a brand new Tivo for free by signing up for a year's service and pay only the $19.95 a month. Hmmmm gonna have to sit down and think about this one for a while :).

OK, if you're willing to give me the $50 in cash, and you throw in the shipping, I'll gladly take your Series 2 box. :D

Umm - I would seriously not post a phone number on a public forum

Will the OP please report how many phone calls he's getting?:) And edit your post.

I'd also suggest that bmgoodman edit his post to remove the OPs phone number from the quoted text.

there are only two tivos that are good for resale...

1) a modified tivo, with increased recording capacity

2) a tivo with lifetime service

c) a combination of a & b

There are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who can not.

And units with free Basic :)

..and potentially, series 1 units that people are willing to put up with nag screens on.

I once bought an unsubbed series 1 from ebay from somebody who was subbing it monthly and thought you had to sub it for it to work. She didn't realize the value it had as a functioning unsubbed TiVo. I told her I intended to leave it unsubbed, and she told me I had to sub it or won't work.

Could you tell me what that value is? Seriously... I've got an unsubbed S1 in a drawer and would like to know.

I bought it in January 2004. It's an HDR212 that was upgraded (by the original owner) to 194 hours, so that definitely increased the price tag. I paid $200 for it. At the time I had seen unupgraded series 1's sell for $125, so I effectively only spent $75 more dollars for the upgrade.

But I don't know how much prices have changed since then.

I also by the way, lifetimed it this year just before they cut off our lifetiming ability. I still use this TiVo quite actively. (It's my TiVo, and my wife has her own series 2 TiVo.)

I did use it unsubbed all the way from January 2004 until early this year. It was only recently that I broke down and subbed it.

How did you use it unsubbed? What can it do?

Manual recordings. Works like a digital VCR but with buffering capabilities for live TV.

Obviously there is no guide data.

Yes, you can do manual recordings, including manual repeating recordings, which sort of simulate having an SP. You can use the To Do List, and through the To Do List you can delete manual repeating recordings if need be. (The SP manager is not available for unsubbed series ones, so you need to use the To Do List to delete a manual repeating recording - it will indeed delete the whole SP and not just the one occurrence.)

An unsubbed series 1 will still dial in to keep the clock synchronized, and this service is still available for free without subbing. One thing the unsubbed TiVo will do a VCR will not do is allow "Keep at Most" settings. That feature works fine on the unsubbed TiVo, and I made good use of it. But no guide data, and no suggestions, and no WishLists.

The other thing that makes this unsubbed TiVo superior to a VCR (in addition to the KAM settings) is:

Live TV buffering is available
Trickplay features (7 second instant replay, 30 second skip forward, etc) are available.
Also, remembering back to my old VCR days, I always had to make sure the right tape was inserted at the right times, and needed to position the tapes correctly, and of course all that is not needed with an unsubbed TiVo.
Plus sometimes I'd hit the end of a tape and miss the end of a show, with a VCR. That doesn't really happen with an unsubbed TiVo. All in all, it was pretty handy.

But I eventually subbed it, because I decided I really liked the guide data, and Suggestions/Wishlists/etc. But even unsubbed, I consider it way better than a VCR.

Tim,

Thanks for the info. Back when my S1 modem went out, I bought a S2 and was allowed to transfer my lifetime subscription to it. But it would be nice to fire up the ol' S1 and use it to manually record a few things once a week.

Since the modem is out it won't really do anything and I need to run the guided setup again to change my source since my cable provider (and lineup) has changed. Would this all work if I got a cheap external serial modem?

timckelley

Yes, you bring up a good point. Even unsubbed, guided setup is possible, so I think fixing your modem or getting an external one would work.
