The high $800 price of the S3 limits the number of potential customers. Anyone care to speculate what the S3 will cost in 4 months?
I'm weighing whether to upgrade my S1 and transfer the lifetime subscription now, or hold off and just go with the prepayment or multi-room subscription when S3 pricing is at such a premium.

Same in 4 months - $800 list, with deals as low as $650.

There is another thread here in this forum discussing this. It had a lot of good, sound messages. If I recall correctly, the general consensus seemed to speculate a very small price decrease (perhaps in the form of a rebate) in the first quarter 2007, and then a moderate decrease by mid-year. The thread couldn't come to consensus about any hard numbers.

You can get the Tivo now for $669!

In 4 months time, I would exect pricing to be around $550. At that time, there will be no lifetime transfer, so that's the reason the rebates will not be available until at least 1/1/2007.

Is that one of the "grandfathered" S1's?

Keep in mind that the S3 was designed for high-end consumers, and those who own HDTV's and subscribe to HDTV will likely pay premium prices for the S3. The S3 wasn't designed for all consumers.

I don't think so but correct me if I'm mistaken. My lifetime Tivo subscription was purchased Dec 6, 2000.

HDTVs are no longer high-end. Regular old televisions aren't selling and retailers have moved their remaining inventory to clearance isle--next to the VCRs, film cameras, and walkman tape players. Size and resolution defines whether a HDTV is high-end or typical.
Tivo probably isn't selling many Series 2 units, with customers either scraping together enough for a Series 3 or waiting for the price to come down. The Series 3--along with the death of the regular old television--has probably killed off the majority of Series 2 sales opportunities.
I paid about $450 for my Series 1 with lifetime service in December 2000. Hell of a deal. Yes, I'm finding the $1000 upgrade price a little hard to swallow so maybe I'll just sit on my wallet.

I think you might be wrong on this one. I doubt the sales of the S3 have made a dent in the sales of the S2. I just don't think they are sellling enough S3's yet to have that affect. This quarter will be a poor judge of long term S3 sales though just because the S3 was new and there was pent up demand for it. Keep in mind that Tivo is giving away the S2 at almost zero up front cost.
