View Full Version : Series 3 turns off?! Why?

Finally got my Series 3 up and running-- I added it to my Harmony remote, and that seems to be working, too. The only gotcha is that the remote appears to be turning the tivo off (or possibly putting it on standby)-- something I didn't think you could do at all.

Front panel displays all turn off with the exception of the LEDs. Is it still capable of recording in this state, or do I need to dig in to the Harmony config and figure out how to keep the remote from disabling the tivo? What do I even call the "off" state? Why does this capability exist on the tivo when you need it to be on all the time?

My old DirecTV unit didn't have this issue with the harmony remote. It was just on all the time, no matter what. It did have a standby mode, but it was buried in the menus.

Thanks for any help/advice/terminology clarification.

Yes, it does go to standby by default when you use the Harmony. If you want to change that, on the Harmony setup page click on "More options" for the TiVo, click "Adjust power settings", choose "Leave this device on all the time".

Initially, I changed my Harmony to keep the S3 on all the time, but the display is so tiny and the clock flickering (every time the time changes) is so annoying, I changed it back recently to go to standby. And, yes, it records just fine whether it's in standby or not.

So when it goes to standby, do you lose the 30 second skip? I found when I put my series 3 in standby the 30s skip goes away (I have a harmony 880 remote which did the same thing..put it in standby by default).

my series 2 sony svr-3000 didn't do this when i put it in standby.

Bierboy is right on the money. The default Harmony logic for ALL TiVos is to put them in Standby. It's the first thing I disable :)

You shouldn't see the 30 second skip go away ... I've suspended mine a couple of times as a test, and I doubt the skip has gone away.

I got the standby disabled on the remote. Very strange, though. I can't speak for other models, but it was definitely not the default behavior for the Harmony remote and the DirecTivo I had before this.

I don't have any real problem with standby mode, just with the ensuing confusion if the remote "misses" once and gets out of sync. Then you end up with the tivo turning off the next time you turn everything on and vice versa. Not a big deal from my end-- but I'm not the only one that uses the television.
