Just got my new S3 and am not yet ready to do the Lifetime Service transfer. Wanted to just add it on for $6.95 for the first month. As long as I call TiVo and transfer the Lifetime from another unit before the deadline I should be fine, right?

I would not count on that working. I remember reading somewhere that lifetime must be transferred right from the beginning. I could be wrong, so I suggest you call the VIP number first.

Rick,
I did EXACTLY what you want to do without any problems whatsoever. As you mention, the trick is that you have to cancel the $6.95 sub within the 30 day cancellation window, since you're really agreeing to a yearly contract. As long as you cancel the monthly within 30 days, you can then transfer a lifetime sub to the S3. I did this just this past week, and the CSR was able to handle the cancellation and lifetime transfer in one very quick phone call. The CSR I got was really on the ball, and completed both transactions perfectly. And in addition, and completely NOT expected, he also refunded the $6.95 charged for the first month.

Now when you go activate your lifetime sub, do you need someone to use as a referral??? ;)

Ditto. I called yesterday and did the exact same thing as Hank.

If by deadline, you mean the 30-day deadline, yes.

If you mean by the 1/31/07 transfer deadline, no.

Hmmmm ..... When I bought my S3, just 2 weeks ago, and transferred my lifetime, I wasn't allowed to use a referral. I asked, and the rep said I was the first one he's had that asked.

I went monthly to start with in order to avoid the possible hassle of specifying a referral. I knew I could just do it online when I signed up.

I was under the (mistaken?) impression that I could procrastinate until 1/31/07 with transfering my lifetime. Luckily, my 30 days isn't quite up yet.

You can use a referral for the S3 lifetime transfer since you really end up with a 1 year subscription first. Whoever referred you will just need to go into their rewards account and request the credit.

I haven't paid the $199 transfer yet. I signed up my S3 almost a month ago at the MSD monthly price of $6.95. I gotta make my move in the next couple days to be within the 30 day windows it seems.

With these price changes, should I not bother transferring the lifetime from my S2 and just stay where I'm at? Will I continue to pay $6.95 on my S3 indefinitely, or does something happen in 12 months?

Threads like this have me confused.

How do I know I will still be paying $6.95 on my S3 a year from now? If it is going to be more, I would rather do the transfer to my S3 and dump my S2 in a year.

How about buying a S1 lifetime from eBay for $300 or less? You should be able to get at least that much back if you decide to sell the S2 lifetime unit later.

Now why didn't I think of that?

just bought a new TiVoHD, I want to go monthly for 2-3 months and then either buy lifetime (I'm ok if I don't credit the monthly fees to it), or see if they will transfer the lifetime from my 9/2000 S1.

But I called Tivo and they made it very clear that after 30 days I'm stuck with monthly for a year! I offered them $$ for lifetime in 90 days they would turn me away.

Is that everyone's experience?

thanks

I am an old S1 lifetime user.. Who would like to understand what the current options are for HD upgrades you all mention?

If i buy a HD box can I transfer my existing lifetime from the S1 to the new box within the 30 days you discuss? but there is an additional charge?

what is the 1/31/09 deadline?

When I called customer care all I got was "we can sell you a new one and new service...." no real help beyond that.

what is the VIP number?

if you bought it before January 2000, (not sure of the exact date) you can get a free transfer of service. Otherwise, I'm told you're out of luck for a transfer. However, if the S1 is still alive, then you get a discount on the monthly or lifetime service of 20-25%.

I'd also like to know what a "VIP number" is.

What does "if the S1 is still alive" mean? I have an old S1 lifetime bought on 05/01/2000 that works but has not been used in a while. I do not have a land line for it to dial in with and last I checked the ethernet add-on was not working.
