Is there any scenario that an active lifetime would/could be on a brand new in box S3?

Sure, if the lifetime was transferred to the S3.

Wouldn't that require retrieving the TiVo Service Number from the back of the S3?

You mean the one that is also printed on the side of the box? ;)
(Making the assumption that it is indeed printed on the side of the box like all previous TiVo models)

:o I guess that would be the one.
Do we know for sure if it is indeed on the box?

Yes, I just checked the box and it's there.

So when I set it up, it will already be set as a lifetime right out of the box?
Would I even need to do anything-if I were not the original purchaser?
Or would I then call Tivo, give them my info and home free from there?

The lifetime transfer process does not take effect until you call the VIP number and pay $199. Then after 60 days, the S3 will show as Lifetime. No one who has initiated the process has Lifetime yet, to be technical, because 60 days since the first S3 was sold has not elasped. See the post here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4408991&&#post4408991).

This is the scenario I was told, could this be true?
If lifetime is put on with either a lifetime gift certificate or using a transfer from an old grandfathered series one then the activation is immediate. If using the limited transfer until end of year by paying the $299 transfer fee then the unit does not become official lifetime for 60 days.

I'm debating getting a "spare" Series 3 and transferring a lifetime to it. I've already done so with two, but my Humax DRT800 doesn't burn DVDs right anymore so I could part with that lifetime, also.
I figure it might pay to just shelve it for a year and then seeing what the market is for them.

Yes and no.
It's true except that the lifetime transfer fee is $199

hiker - That wasn't true in my case: My S3 showed "5: Lifetime" the day after I called. (My Series 1 disappeared completely, and is nagging me to phone in, but that's another story.)

Did you transfer from an old Series 1 that had the grandfathered (free) lifetime transfer option still?

The S1 option was really free?

Grandfather transfer: The one-time "Grandfather transfer" (for people who purchased Product Lifetime on or before January 21, 2000 [as in, more than six years ago], and who have not already used their one-time transfer) is still allowed and will also be honored for future hardware releases from TiVo, such as the Series3. If you have any trouble when you call, please mention KDB code 09-07-04 to the agent.
;)
Yea grandfather transfers show the lifetime status on the S3 in about 1 hour after you make the call. ~Sy

Since the TiVo service fee structure has changed beginning this month, I had been wondering what the service fee would be for the old previous lifetime S1 or S2 once the 1 year free service was up. TiVoPony has now answered that question here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4553809&&#post4553809).
