Setup:
Tivo series 3 via hdmi to Samsung DLP. Samsung optical output to AV receiver.
Equipped with cable card.

When tuning to hd channel on tivo, I seem to only be getting pro logic. If I tune directly from tv to hd channel I get dolby digital.

-tried both dolby digital and dolby digital to pcm
-reviewed tv settings, didn't find anything per se.

What am I doing wrong?

I donno if this maybe root cause but strangely enough, I think the hdmi cable is bad (or really hoping so). At first I got no picture until I wiggled it a bit. Then tried switching and couldn't get it to work. Gosh I hope it's not the TV.....

Unfortunately it sounds like your TV is not capable of passing dolby digital onto the receiver, it can only pass through PCM. This is actually fairly common. My TV cannot do it either :( Also a samsung.

The Samsung DLPs cannot pass DD through the optical out.

My Mitsu does the same thing. Need a separate feed to my receiver. Kind of defeats the purpose of the only one cable theory of using HDMI in the first place. There are prices to pay for being early adopters.

The right configuration is:
S3 HDMI -> AVR w/ HDMI switch -> TV

One HDMI cable, one connection to the TV. More and more AVR's have HDMI switching and upconverting.
