I thought this one was a little rough around the edges, but I liked it.

A few observations:

1) I thought all the Torchwood toys were never to leave Torchwood. Why is Gwen repeating the mistakes of her predecessor?

2) Do you think Captain Jack trains everyone to shoot like that, or does he fancy Gwen?

3) What's with Captain Jack not sleeping? Is that courtesy of Rose or the 51st century?

4) Previews for the next episode look really good. I can't wait!

1) I gather that's probably going to be something of a running joke.

2) I haven't made up my mind about that, yet.

Yeah, there was something about this episode that just seemed a bit off; but I'm not sure it's fair to judge that sort of thing yet, after just 3 episodes. It might be that the first 2 are the anomalies. :)

I watched it last night. I liked it, but Jack seems a lot crankier than he was on Dr. Who. :)

Well, considering he got left on an uninhabited space station on Dr Who, all by himself, he probably has a right to be cranky.

since he can't die, who knows how long it took him to get to Cardiff and the current time line.

1) Because she can't help herself? They all seem to still have the same problem. Owen brought the 'seashell prison' out of Torchwood when he wasn't supposed to. Besides, maybe she had permission. :D

2) I don't think Jack trains everyone like that. Could be he's attracted to her. He is pretty much attracted to everything. :p Gwen is feeling some attraction to Jack as well, which is supposed to provide our relationship problems in Gwen's homelife.

3) I'm guessing it's courtesy of Rose.

This episode was a bit more herky-jerky for me. It didn't seem to have the flow which the previous two episodes had. That said, it was still a good show.

I didn't care much for the way the Torchwood guy; can't remember his name, got personally involved. That could just be his character though.

All in all I'm like this show a lot. As things progress I'd like to see some more Whovian references, though I could just be missing them all!

I know what you mean, it seemed like whoever directed was slightly off in a few spots throughout the show.

Some of Jack's lines seemed out of place at times, like a disconnect from what was happening.

Two big examples of disconnect towards the end of the show: the chest compressions for a stab victim and the disconnect between Gwen and Jack. Gwen upset about the death and Jack extremely happy that sunrise was coming.

Was there a different director in this episode?

2) I bet he trains EVERYBODY ;) like that. I actually started feeling warm towards the idea of learning marksmanship during that scene. Too bad Jack isn't real :p

I saw the Dr Who episode with him and Rose (the one with the gas masks and all and then the one with the TV space station right?), what did Rose have to do with him? I just remember that he was left on his own spaceship as it was about to explode or something.

At the end of season 1, of Dr. Who, Rose, aka Bad Wolf, brought Jack back to life.

In the first Torchwood episode, we learn Jack has some lingering effects from being brought back to life that only a certain Doctor can help him with.

And in episode 3 of Torchwood, we learn Jack doesn't sleep. Could this be from the Bad Wolf? We don't know.

On top of that, Jack Barrowman (the actor) is gay.

I guess I need to see season 1 again. I don't remember her bringing him back to life. I think I remember him using the little nanobytes on her, but nothing more than that.

Yeah, I knew that....he was turned down to play Will on Will and Grace because he "wasn't gay enough". Go figure.

Even if he was straight, I'M married and he's in Great Britain. Geographically and, dare I say, anatomically impossible to have a relationship. I have as much a chance with the character as the actor ;)

The nanobytes were in the episodes set in WW2 in the middle of season one. The incident involving Jack dying and being brought back was in an episode at the very end of season one, set well into the future on a space station orbiting earth.

Owen Harper. My impression was that it was out of character for him, but he became very emotionally involved since the device was essentially pumping the emotions of the scene into him. He felt what she felt and that's what drove him to do what he did.

First off, thank you for starting an episode specific thread. I was concerned we were going to end up with 1 giant season long thread for this show, which I have been avoiding because I wasnt up to date.

I am enjoying the show, I think that the no sleeping is a side effect from BadWolf.

If the device has 2 parts, I sort of expected that when seperate one half showed the past, one half showed the future, and when combined they did some other action, or allowed more control or something. It would have made more sense in my brain, which isn't saying much :)

I agree. The same was happening with Gwen but she had Jack to confide in and that brought her out of it a bit. Owen didn't talk to anyone about it.

Due to a brief discussion with bierboy (just two posts long!), I thought it'd be fun to resurrect the Torchwood threads since there are some of us who are just getting into it for the first time (like me and bierboy). I recorded Torchwood as they reran the whole season 1 before they aired season 2 (which I also recorded) so I'm working through my TiVo's Torchwood folder, hence this is why I'm catching up.

Would anyone be interested in joining bierboy and I, kind of like what some of us are doing with Babylon 5?

And as for this episode, this was an okay episode. I wasn't a stellar fan of the first couple of episodes and I was almost ready to throw in the towel after this one, but the subsequent episodes after this one hooked me in. I'm not a big Doctor Who fan, so I don't know ANYTHING about the world that we're inhabiting, but from what I can tell, I like the fact that I don't need to know what's going on in Doctor Who in order to be able to enjoy Torchwood so far.

This is a small point I will make about #2. Remember that in the UK police officers don't routinely carry firearms, so Gwen probably isn't as comfortable with a gun as a US police officer would be. Since the TW crew all carry weapons, Jack may have wanted to make sure that Gwen could shoot accurately.

Good point. Hadn't thought about that.
