View Full Version : S2 to S2 transfers - now really fast...

I have had two S2's - one is wireless and the other hardwired and my transfers were not very fast - I couldn't start a transfer and watch in real time, always had to wait and play would still catch up to transfer.
I just swapped one S2 for a Dual Tuner and added a TiVo wireless adaptor on both TiVo's (hardwire on new S3) and now the transfers are very fast. I was amazed when I transferred my first program and saw that the green bar was already way further along than the real time play. I even hit FF once to see on another just started transfer and it took at least a minute for it to catch up to transfer.
Are these TiVo wireless adaptors really this fast compared to others?
Anyway I am happy and just wanted to throw this out there.

The TiVo wireless adapters are very fast. TiVo designed them specifically to take some of the burden off of the CPU in the TiVo itself, so that it could concentrate on doing the actual transfer. On top of that you added a DT unit, which has a processor which is considerably faster then the older S2 TiVos, so that probably added a bit to the speed as well. In fact you'll probably notice the speed is a little faster from the DT to the other TiVo then it is the other way around.

I have been considering the TiVo adapters for a while. I've been using USB to ethernet adapters, connected to wireless bridges (Netgear WGE101) for both my tivos. This used to be a great setup, and very happy with performance.
Over the past weeks, I've seen a serious decline in my wireless transfer speed, including TiVoToGo. My router is falling back to 11Mbs for some reason -- nothing has changed from a hardware/location perspective -- and it's no longer practical for use. Odd, since signal strength is excellent for both, 92% and 81% respectively
So, my queston... given my setup, can I expect better performance from the TiVo adapters over my WEG101's? Does it sound like I need a new wireless router?
Getting desperate! Thanks!

Your USB Ethernet->Bridge setup produces about the same speed results as a TiVo Wireless adapter. So I wouldn't expect a big boost if you switch. However with less components there is less to go wrong, so problems like you're currently having would be a lot easier to trouble shoot.

The hard-wired adapters are typically not the source of speed degradation, but you're point is well taken. I have 2 more components than I would if I got the adapters alone.
I may purchase a newer router, just to see if it makes a difference.
