No thread yet? I guess this wasn't that popular an episode.
They finally got around to showcasing my boys, the Cybermen.
The Mickey/Rickey dynamic should make things interesting for a while.
Mickey/Rickey's grandmother was pretty compelling.

Another good episode. I loved Rose's look when the Doctor mentioned chatting it up with one of the waitstaff!

Rose's mom can be a nasty piece of work in an alternate universe too.

So is this an "alternate universe" introduction of the cybermen, or was there never another origin of the cybermen shared in the series?

These are different Cybermen than the earlier ones, which had a different origin.
(By the way, Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberman) is your friend!)

But don't read too far in the Cybermen description on Wikipedia, or you get spoiled like I did :-(

since I'm new to Doctor Who, I'm not familiar with the history...so I thought that these cybermen were the first generation of those other things (can't remember their names) that have no emotions and wiped out Doctor Who's race...

I liked it, I think a lot of the people in this forum (like me) watched these when (the day after) they aired in the UK.

You mean the Daleks? The Cybermen are totally different humanity hating robotic species.

yep...that's who I meant...again, since I'm new to this series, the parallels seemed to point that way...but I think there's room in the universe for TWO species with no emotions, made out of metal, who hate humans ;)

From what we have learned so far, the daleks did not wipe out the time lords, the doctor did, while trying to destroy the daleks.

For starters, here's the Wiki page for this episode...

Any chance we'll be seeing Matthew Waterhouse in any of these Cyberman stories, complete with some gold dust?
Hmmm, is Mr. T Cyberman-resistant? (All that bling y'know)

We actually don't know much--lots of speculation, though. I wonder if there might have been an incident similar to what the Doctor did on Satellite 5, when he was going to try to wipe out the Daleks--some sort of event that wiped out his race at the same time.

I think that's exactly what happened, at least in the doctor's mind. He said more or less exactly that in an episode last season. Of course, it could be survivor's guilt...

I have yet to figure out why my TiVo didn't record this episode, but it didn't. I've checked a couple of BT sites, but since this episode originally aired in Britain last year, there are no active torrents any more.
Any advice or ideas as to where I might go to find a copy or otherwise view this episode would be most appreciated. PM, please.

I hope not. One can only take so much mathematical excellence. :D
But how about Sarah Sutton's character Nyssa, out for revenge for what they did to Adric. Now that would be something!
Or you could always bring back Ace. She can take out a platoon of Cybermen, blindfolded.

The Scifi Channel has an odd telecast for Doctor Who last week and this coming weekend.
Central time: 7pm and repeated at 9pm instead of 10pm.
Perhaps that change weirded out your Tivo listings???
I imagine that the Scifi Channel will get around to reruns sooner than we want them to. For awhile they were re-airing Friday's program on Sunday nights at 10pm.
They've gotton out of that habit, but keep an eye on it just the same...

Ace and Adric were my favorites. Okay, K-9 too.

Just finished watching this last night. It was a good ep. I especially liked the tie in with the ear pieces and the cybermen design. When Rose's mom was accessed by lumic the ear pieces looked exactly like the ear pieces on the Cybermen, cool.
Also after reviewing the previous incarnations of the cybermen I like this particular design much more. They are quite a bit more menacing than the one pictured in the end of the world episode for instance.
I find it interesting that Zeppelin travel is used extensively when other forms of transportation are available. Still it's cool and reminds me of the game Crimson Skies and Sky Captain(Haven't seen it) to a lesser extent. I guess instead of yachts they have Zeppelins.
As for the surrender part I thought when that happened that without the ear pieces certainly they wouldn't be compatible. It'll be interesting to see part II on Friday.

It's not that... I think a lot of us jumped the gun on this season.
You'll remember they found an 'old' Cyberman head in an episode from the previous season.

I'm trying to do the same with Torchwood but ep 1 is being difficult. :)
