I have had an ongoing problem that I cannot figure out how to fix. When I set a season pass to record only first run shows, in many instances TIVO does not seem to know the difference between first run and a re-run even though the re-runs are clearly maked with an "R" when I view the show details. For example, I watch the tonight show. It reocrds the 11:35 show as well as another old show at about 2:00am unless I manually delete the re-runs. How can I get TIVO to work properly

I know this is an old post but I am having the sam issue with my new Tivo Premiere. I made a Season Pass for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to only record fist run episodes. But it's also recording reruns from earlier this year at a different time slot. My Tivo Series 3 doesn't do that.
To prevent the recording of these reruns I have had to go in the To Do List and cancel the reruns. But I have will now have to do this every couple of weeks or so, not making this a fix to the problem. Am I missing something?

I have had this issue with other programs like "The Daily Show." This often occurs with programs that are on Mon-Fri but air multiple times each day on cable channels. To resolve it I just put in a manual recording telling the TiVo to record, for example, from 11pm-11:30pm Mon-Fri, picking up the first airing of "The Daily Show" each night.
The drawback is that it still records during weeks the show is in reruns. And for "The Tonight Show" you might miss it when the show airs later than 11:35pm due to a sporting event earlier that night.

I'm just curious as to why my new Premiere has this issue, yet my older Series 3 doesn't.
UPDATE: Okay my Premiere just did it again tonight! This time it's recording last weeks Sons of Anarchy, yet the Season Pass is set to record "First-run only".
I found some information that help understand up why this is happening.

I gave up fighting this battle many many years ago. About half my Season Passes are Manual. Fortunately, on the west coast, the Tonight Show never starts late unless it's in reruns due to something like iirc US Open Tennis.

I hated finding reruns of Jay on my TiVo, they're from about 3 AM, that's why I switched to manual recordings.
But here's an idea. I think the TiVo remembers an episode it has seen in the last 28 days, and most of the Jay reruns are more recent than that. So if your TiVo really is brand new, maybe you just need to wait a month and you will see less of this problem.
