Alright...I a newer Tivo guy. I looked at a lot of threads and dont really see one addressing this, so if I missed it dont yell at me!

I have a newer Humax 400 DVR (4 months old) and it freezes on me once every day or so. Is this a bad drive? Humax says I can replace for $50, but it sucks giving a newer one away for a used referbished one! I reboot and the next morning...FROZE. Sucks. Any suggestions anyone?

Since you mentioned the 400, I think you are talking about the DRT400 (DVD Burner model). I forget the exact warranty, but I think you are well within it. They shouldn't be charging you anything. I have replaced my DRT800 twice at no charge because of issues (namely the remote double entry issue), even after 1 year, but that might be because I complained about it early and they promised a software upgrade to fix the problem and that never happened.

Humax seems to be very sorry they ever got into the Tivo business because of all the problems they have had with IR problems. I would call their support number back and demand a replacement. The ugly part of that is that they will send you a refurb, but after replacing a few refurbs, my current reburb is the best of all 3 I have worked with. It's a annoyance that prevents me from getting another Humax, but eventually, you will have what you want.

Bottom line...the freeze issue shouldn't be your problem. A replacement will likely fix the problem, but may introduce another (slowness). Get up in Humax's grill and they will send you something no charge.

I will do just that!.

They are saying my warranty covers only parts...not labor, so $50 for a refurb. I'll yell and try. Thanks so much for your help!

They changed their policy on returns..Humax is assuming all the DVD unit are out of labor warranty and within a year or so I think they will stop even with the parts part as all Humax will be at least 2 years old (I think they stopped making them in 2005)

Interesting. They did say they would only cover parts.
