Hey folks, please excuse if this specific question has been asked, I DID search and didn't find anything quite like my issue...

I've had a series1 Phillips 20-hour that I hacked into a 120 w/telnet/extraction for a couple of years. I've been very happy with it but have had the increasing desire to get a series 2, primarily for it's ability to have "folders". I couldn't justify the price of a new unit and didn't want to hassle with the rebates until one day a local was selling a Tivo 24004a for $25 w/USB->Network adapter... I couldn't pass it up.

So I bought it, put in a WD 120 and fired her up. Everything is GREAT with one exception.. The unit is 3 to 5 times louder than my old unit! (Whatever 3-5 times means). The hard drive itself is an identical model to my series1 and I set the accoustic management to the lowest sound level - it WAS definitely louder with the hard drive not set to low accoustics but I still can't stand the louder series2. It seems that the accoustics of the series 2 are just worse - but I've narrowed what seems to be the primary contributor -the fan on the series 2.

I can't find a replacement fan since "*********" quietcooler seems to have been taken offline. I can't find a replacement anywhere! So I have some questions for you experts:

1) Does anyone else find the series 2 louder than series 1 or is this likely something unique to my used unit?
2) Has anyone had luck replacing a series 2 fan specifically to reduce noise?
3) Should I be scouring looking for a low-noise fan or would a stock fan suffice (I guess that's related to #1).

Any other suggestions? I seriously can't justify shutting down my 1 for the 2 based on the noise level!

PS - the units are right next to each other, alone on seperate shelves of the same rack. I don't think there's any accoustic issues going on with placement -the unit is noticably loud sitting on my kitchen table with it's guts exposed.

thanks!

I have a Series 2 model 649 purchased in June this year. I didn't even know it had a fan -- i.e., it makes no noticeable noise.

Have you tried cleaning the fan? Using some compressed air can get rid of dust that might be causing it to make more noise.

I think the 649 units use an 80mm fan, like the S1s, so would be quiters and an S2. I could be wrong.

However, I do notice that a 2xx is a bit noisier than a Series 1, becuas it has a 60mm fan, and the HDD is not isolated from the chassis like on an S1. Chaging the fan might help, as changing the fan on mine helpt quiet it some (the fan wat just getting dirty andf work, I replaced it with one from a parts DVR)

Thanks folks,

The 24004a has a 70mm fan. And to top it off, it's 25mm deep instead of the readily-available 15mm (or maybe I have that backwards). I actually cannot find a single source for a replacement - there was a website that I aparently can't mention or it gets marked as spam but they sold the "quietcooler" and it was 70mm replacement. But for somereason their website is down this week, perhaps they went under...

So... I can't seem to find a replacement! Anyone know of one?

I will try to clean it - I did use compressed air to blow it out but I think it needs lubrication. I didn't try pulling it completely apart but perhaps that's next, heck maybe a little wd-40 squirt! :-)

Anyway - thanks for the suggestions and if anyone knows where one can be purchased that'd be great. I have seen a couple of parts machines on ebay - I may go that direction but it's overkill... Ah well!
