View Full Version : Deleting contents of "Recently Deleted" folder

I must say that I really like the "Recently Deleted" folder. It is great to not actually delete something when it was a mistake. However, it is a pain when it gets really full and slows down my TIVO. Is there a way to empty the folder completely without having to go item by item and delete each one?

I know that the contents automatically delete as space is needed or time is elapsed, but I would like the option to empty it manually. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Not possible. Just let them delete as space is needed. The quantity of items in the folder should not have anything to do with the speed of the TiVo.

Can't do it huh? That stinks. Maybe a full folder shouldn't affect the speed of the Tivo, but it does. If you think about it, your computer runs faster when you first get it because it isn't loaded with a bunch of stuff. Searches faster, etc. I find the same to be true with my Tivo. At first bringing up the Tivo menu was quick. Just as it was quick to bring up the TV Schedule. However, when I have over 100 items in my "Recently Deleted" folder, a lot of which tend to be movies (so they are larger files), I notice a definite lag.

I guess this is just an annoyance I have to live with. Or maybe there is a way to clear the folder remotely? I am just thinking out loud, but if anyone has a suggestion, thanks.

Hopefully Tivo will give us users more control over these types of details in later updates.

TiVos use a custom file system specifically designed for large files. It doesn't have the defrag issues that other common file systems have. I would agree that the Now Playing list is slower to load due to Recently Deleted having a lot of items. But I think it is a stretch to say that the overall system performance is slower because of these items.

You can delete the files, but one at a time (and I think you have to acknowlege each deletion). I'm in the camp that says you don't need to worry about it. I've never seen any report of a correlation of slow speed to a large recently deleted folder.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong (and I am SURE they WILL!!!) but I seem to remember reading in another thread that the RD folder adds nothing new to the TiVo except that NOE the "deleted" files are displayed. They were ALWAYS there before, but just not viewable (unless you hacked into it).

When the NP screen is loaded up, there is only that ONE folder extra that displays, so it shouldn't cause any noticeable delays. And the TiVo isn't doing anything with the files in the RD folder anyway, so there shouldn't be any slowdown as a result of that.

I have several hundred files in the RD folder of my DT 180 and I do not notice any difference. I will probably go tomorrow and delete 'em just to see if it makes things speed up any, but I don't see how it would...

Maybe the slowdowns that are being experienced and blamed now on the RD folder are the result of something else that has been discussed in this forum quite a bit over the past few months - the bugs or glitches in the new software.

As for deleting these files, I think that you can get rid of them just by hitting the "Clear" button when each is highlighted. At l;east it works for files in the main NP screen, and in other folders there.

This is true. When I first got my new Tivo the software that was preloaded did not have the recently deleted folders. Within a day I already has my Tivo put to good use and recorded and deleted multiple shows. When the new software was finally installed on my Tivos those shows form the first day where still on my Tivo, now just under the RD folder.

No, it doesn't.

The slowdown you're seeing is probably due to the software update that came with the RD folder. The 7.3 software does have slowdown issues. Hopefully, the next update will solve these.

+1

Before the RD Folder, those shows were on your hard drive as well. You just couldn't access them. If slowdown was an a symptom of a full RD folder, then people would've complained before the folder update that their Tivo was getting progressively slower. That didn't happen. Your slowness most likely is the symptom of the recent software update.
