Just got a new replacement HR10-250. I have not plugged in the phone line at all. Does the guide data download via the phone call? Will there be any issues by not plugging in the phone line (aside from avoiding the dreaded 6.3 download)?
The guide data comes down over the satellite not the phone. After a couple of weeks you will get a message reminding you that the call has not been made recently. After about a month the reminder is daily.
I have two HR10-250 TiVos neither has had a phone line connected for over a year and no ill effects.

The first time you hook up the hr10-250, it should make you make a test call to activate the DVR service. after that, i think you're fine. except for the nag messages.

But won't it grab the update (6.3) when it makes that test call?

I don't think so. When I activated my box it didn't upgrade until the first scheduled call. So, if you pull your line after the initial call I think you're OK.

Well so far so good. I don't think it grabbed the 6.3 update. Phone line is unplugged.

Didn't even do the test call. Have all functions including DVR. Unit has been working fine since yesterday. Ain't gonna plug it in, either. :)

With a new receiver and new access card you have to. DVR functions won't work without it.
