I just got the 6.3 updated software on my hr10-250s. I don't see the big freaking deal. Can anyone tell me why I should be creaming about this update. Can I home network my boxes without hacking? Can I do anything other than the folder feature? What's the freaking big??

It's mainly the speed improvement for me although on my box the - outweighted the + so I went back to 3.1.5f since I can reprioritize my SPs,etc from my PC anyway...

I scheduled a recording for MNF in a matter of seconds last night on the HR10 which would have taken minutes in 3.1.x. That alone is worth it.

bidger,

It will be worth it after the audio dropouts and reboots are fixed!

I have one crippled 6.3 unit and one 3.1 unit without a phone connection for now.

Not an issue for me. Optical audio connection and no digital locals. I had more dropouts with 3.1.x than 6.3a.

The biggest issue for me was the speed of the guide. I live in the guide and 3.1 makes the guide so slow it's useless(10-15 seconds per page to update).

Clear and delete helps the speed as does removing one of the HD SAT inputs.

I have my old SD Tivo still activated and the speed difference is amazing. (split screen).

One other minor tweak with 6.3 that I liked was the channel lists.

Being able to create 2 seperate channel lists is cool. (hopefully I couldn't do this before and am looking dumb)

I have my favorite channels set and then on the "You Receive" list I have all my favorite channels PLUS all the NFL Sunday ticket channels. It's nice not to have to scroll around them during the week.

Separate lists existed prirt to 6.3. But, 6.3 makes it possible to create both at the same time.

How did you go back to 3.15f? Does it require Linux knowledge, or can it be done very easily?

so you couldn't read the numerous threads regarding 6.3a to see for yourself?

The easiest way to go back to 3.1f.

I don't know why you guys didn't tell jlbrum about the best two new features you get with 6.3a. Until you do a clear and delete everything your HR10-250 has a constant reboot feature. It even reboots when you try to setup a new SP. What a great idea!

My favorite new feature is the Fox ota audio dropouts though. Man, I was SO tired of being able to hear a whole tv show. Then 6.3a came along and auto muted my shows in various spots. I try to make a game out of when the sound will quit now. My wife is even starting to figure out how to read lips.

They must be incredibly smart to only enable this auto mute feature with Fox ota. I know it was an awful lot of work as it took them over a year to implement this new software. Now I find myself disappointed when watching shows on other channels and the sound never drops out. Oh well, I guess I can't have my cake and eat it too. ;)

Well maybe I am the only one, but I say YEEHAA!!! All 3 of my HR10s have been upgraded for a while now. I get HD local via the dish and use optical audio. I have had zero, count them zero problems on any unit. Knock on wood.

Okay Conspiracy Theory Time.

Maybe 6.3 IS a way to force Tivo users to the HR20.

Think about it. Both Dtv and Fox are controlled by Murdoch. By enabling the audio dropouts only on Fox, he can't be sued. After all, it's his company. However, it annoys people enough, that they accept the HR20 in hopes it will be better.

Not true, I have the real reason from a confidential inside source at Directv.

Rupert Murdoch is really a member of Opus Dei and the HR10s all contain an easter egg that has the proof of Jesus marrying. This easter egg has a timer associated with it so it can only be seen during easter week of 2007. The audio dropouts in 6.3 were deliberately introduced so that when anyone stumbles across the easter egg, there will be no audio during the video.

And, yes, he is hoping that everyone will be frustrated by these issues to the point that they will have moved to the HR20 by then, so no one tries to investigate this easter egg further.

Well, it would make more sense if the OTA on the HR20 was enabled, or if there weren't problems with the MPEG4 locals in many cities. And of course, he'd have to get Tivo to plant the bugs in the software.

Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.

I didn't know this was the case. So, then, there is no way to get OTA with the HR20?

It is really strange that Fox is the one affected and it's a News company. I'd almost say Tivo did it on purpose just to piss off Murdoch but I doubt it as it'll do nothing but help him out. A lot of people will tire of the dropouts and pick up an HR20.

Hardware is there, but it has not been enabled yet. Supposedly soon.

Won't help Tivo...as an unreliable HR10 won't make people more likely to drop big dollars on a S3 were they so inclined.

Won't help D*... as buggy hardware/software will make at least some people look at other alternative providers rather than their "new/improved" DVR.

No conspiracy in my mind...just inadequately tested software (which is pretty darn mind-boggling given the time they had to work on it).

I want to keep my HR10 as long as possible. No larger disk upgrade available for the HR20, at least yet anyway.
