I have a series 2 stand alone hardwired to my network utilitizing the Tivo 2 go features and other media features. My friend recently gave me a used Hughes SD-DVR40. I don't want necessarily want to upgrade the hard drive, but I would like to add it to the multi room viewing. Basically, I just want to transfer shows onto that machine when the main tivo standlone is being used. What is the best and easiest process for making this possible?

Read up on the Zipper (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=265929) - it is the most painless way to enable networked features on a non-R10 model Series 2 DTivo.

Ooops, re-read your post. You cannot xfr shows between a DTivo and a SA (standalone) Tivo using the MRV, but you could between Zipper'd DTivos. Sorry.

A Zippered DTivo has most of the networked features of a SA Tivo, + or - a few. Web interface is a + (can be accessed remotely via this kind of tool (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=312804)), a minus is that you don't have the exact same Tivo-to-Go capability, but enterprising people figure out a way to transfer shows via network cable to their PC (discussion of that not permitted here), but a Google search using the term DTivo Tytoolxxs (remove the x's from the string before entering) should reveal lots of good info.

Depending on which SA he has if he hacked it too then he could transfer shows between them

Basically, the MRV feature is only accessable between two SA units, unless you want to hack a SA and a DTivo?

It is a part of the Tivo service with the SAs, not with the DTivos. If you hack the DTivo you can MRV (between hacked units). If you want to MRV between a DTivo and a SA then both have to be hacked.

Hmmm... I thought the SA wouldn't display the recordings from the DTivo even if both were hacked to disable the encryption since the DTivo recording is a compressed datastream from the satellite, but the source DTivo must be converting it to a .ty file when it sends it to the SA box which the SA can properly display.

Good stuff to know.

It has to do with encryption keys. Both boxes have to have the keys set to the same value.
To MRV between a Standalone and a D-TiVo, iti s easier to set the SA's key to zero, then to find and set the Standalone's key into the Dtivo. At least that is my understanding.

If it were me though, I'd jsut sell the DTiVo to someone that will use it for its intended purpose, and get another SA TiVo, or make other arrangements to watch my TiVo recordings elswhere in my home (and I have done the latter).

How about this, if I enable the media features on the DTivo so that I can transfer shows to my computer, would I then be able to transfer the shows along to the SA? Like using the computer as a hub? It would be a two step process, but it would get the job done. Or, can even a hacked D-Tivo not transfer shows to a computer?

Those are all good questions for the appropriate part of the Underground
