(A question from a novice...)

I just moved. Had been using an HDVR2 with DirecTV and satellite service. Now living with Time Warner Cable, which came with (and requires) its own DVR receiver. So I'm "stuck" with my HDVR2, and no apparent use for it.

I think it's possible to reconfigure it to be used as an additional External Hard Drive for my Mac (running OS X). Or perhaps daisy-chained to the Time Warner DVR receiver for additional storage space. The former being preferable.

Is this possible? How do I do it? Are there any other uses for my old HDVR2 (other than selling it on eBay or using it as a large coaster) that I'm not thinking of?

Any info would be great. Thank you!

If you want to use the hard drive for storage, just pull it and put it in a USB enclosure -- no need for the whole box, and it'll be a lot faster.

Otherwise, if you don't have any other Tivos in use, I'd say sell it. (You can even pull the drive and sell it without -- probably only get $20-$40 but still...)

No, you can't use a DirecTivo as external hard drive storage. The DirecTivo is fairly useless without a subscription to DirecTV. You can either sell it on ebay ($40 is the going price) or remove the 40 GB IDE hard drive from the Tivo and reformat it inside your Mac. Before you do the latter - make sure you own the Tivo and it's not leased from DirecTV.

And no, they do not require you get their DVR service. You have every right to get a TiVo S3 or another standalone DVR.
