I just got one off of eBay and have a related question (which I also posted in the regular DirecTV Tivo thread). Any chance of getting retention to credit me all or part of the equipment cost? Any thoughts on strategy for this?

I purchased a used one off Ebay a year and a half ago and they allowed me to use the card it came with.
It broke within a week, freezing video. DirecTV replaced it under the protection plan. They didn't even say anything about just activating it or where it came from. I don't think they really care.

I bought my HR10-250 off ebay recently. I expected they'd either make me buy a new card or use my old one from a different receiver.. but they didn't care and used the deactivated one from the previous owner.
I was amused to find his old purchases were still listed in the card.. and included 2 adult titles. :D

One problem you can run into is if the card has not been deactivated. Pending that, DTV can't activate it for a different customer. If you buy a floor demo they should include a new card, but even that can be a problem if the original card is still active and linked to the box.
