I have a sister that lives 30miles outside of Lincoln, Nebraska. I got her to switch from Dish to DirecTV, but the tech for DirecTV told her that she would need two DirecTV satellite dish antennas on her roof. One for DirecTV programming and one for local stations. Does that make since? Here in Florida we just had to purchase the one reciever to get local stations.

That depends on which satellite is used for the SPOT BEAM for local channels in her area

If the spot beam satellite is in a "very" different part of the sky, a single dish won't see both signals

I also (Vancouver WA) receive both feeds with a single dish

No, that does not make sense. The Lincoln, NE area gets standard-def local channels using the regular satellites and don't need a second dish. There are some areas where a second dish is required.

Is it possible she's not in the Lincoln DMA (Maybe just over the line)? Have her ask what her DMA for local channels is.

Or go to directv.com, select programming, local channels, and enter her Zip code.

The Lincoln DMA is weird. I work at a tv station (NBC) about 88 miles west of Lincoln, and Lincoln is in our DMA. It's actually listed as Hastings-Lincoln. And yes, the locals for the Lincoln zip are on the 72.5 bird.

She will need a 2nd dish then, no way around it.

Ok...she needs a second dish. Thanks for the answers!

Will she have to do any manual switching when she goes from local channnels to regular DirecTV programming?

No, the receiver will handle that automatically.

I'm puzzled, though - the lookup I did suggested a second dish was not required.

Thanks everyone for the help/answers.

We'll find out on Saturday if she gets two dishes.

I have live in the Lincoln DMA and have locals. You definately need a second 18" for the locals. They will supply a 4 X 4 multiswitch to provide switching. They are currently uplinking the 2 ABC's (Kearney and Lincoln) CBS, the NBC from Hastings, the Fox from Grand Island, The Educ. TV and a CW station from Florida. I am hoping that they will one of these days provide the Omaha stations as they are considered significantly viewed in the Lincoln area.
