i have a sd dvr40
can i use the rear remote serial plug to extend the ir
like the plugs that come with remote extenders?

No, you can't. The remote serial plug on a DTiVo is useful only for connecting to a PC for console or PPP access and then only if you have "hacked" the box.
TiVos do not have remote input jacks. You'll need to use an external extender with an IR blaster affixed to the front of the box.

i have the paramids remote extenders they wont work on either tivos?

Yes, the pyramid extender will work assuming the signal can be seen by the sensor on the front of the TiVo, same as with any other device. I prefer stick-on emitters as they are more reliable.

steve i have another ?
my leapfrogs worked great before i totally redid my house
now they don't work
i just seen on avs that plasmas have a problem with interference
i bought a 42 plasma just before finishing the family room
is there a chance that is why they don't work anymore?

Plasma TVs do interfere with many standard infrared remote sensors. It takes a special design of the sensor circuitry to be immune to the plasma TV interference. The problem is in the remote sensor, not the TV. You may need to purchase a new remote extender that is designed to avoid this problem.
By the way, I've been reading complaints from owners of the new Series 3 that its remote sensor has a big problem with plasma TVs.
