A friend of mine just switched to HDCable and gave me his old DirecTivo boxes. One is a samsung 4080 and the other is an HR10. Ive been poking arround the forum and found out that I cant use them on my dorm's cable network, so what else can I do with the units? I would hate for these two units to jsut sit arround and gather dust.

They make good doorstops.

Can he use the OTA tuners on the HR10 with a Directv subscription?
You could always sell them (Regular DirecTivo won't get very much, but the HR10 probably will) and get a regular Tivo that work with cable (Or 2).

Doubtful too, but worth a try. Ask your RA about having a dish installed. Also, you *MAY* be able to use one of the window sticky mounts so you can mount the dish to a window (If your windows faces toward the South). Doubtful they'll let you do anything, but it's worth a try. Worse that can happen is they say No, and you're no worse off.
Also, depending on the size of your window (Again, providing it faces South), you may be able to mount the dish right inside your room. I've heard of people mounting dishes inside. It's not the best option, but it is an option.

To say it clearly - the Samsung works with a DirecTV satellite dish signal only - nothing else. The HR10 will work with digital broadcast TV signals (not cable and not analog TV) but only as a tuner (no recording) unless you also have a DirecTV subscription, signal and pay the PVR fee.
Both can be sold on eBay and both have some value, the HR10 more than the 4080.
