I have already expanded my TiVo drive and I purchased another one that is even larger than my first one.
I know you cannot expand an already expanded drive. I think I read that I can do it (using -f 9999 -so) but I will lose my recordings. Is this correct?
Is there any way to expand the drive and lose my recordings, then copy the recordings over once the drive has been expanded?
Thanks in advance.

No.
However, if you have a standalone, you can use TiVoToGo to move your recordings that you want to save to a PC. Then you can send them back to the Tivo once you put in the new drive.

What about using parted, a linux partition resize command?

The partitions where the programs are stored are mfs partitions. They are not standard linux partitions.

It is possible, actually -- there's a thread at ddb about coalescing partitions. It's not for the novice, and once you do it you won't be able to use mfstools to back the drive up, but it can be done.
