View Full Version : Service by PPP Sometimes Unavailable

Hi Folks, thanks for all of the great information on the forum. I have a Series 1 Philips box that I bought in 2001 and is still going strong. For several years, TIVO was the only reason I kept a "hard" phone line. Six months ago I got PPP running through the serial port using instructions here (Thanks Otto!). This is wired using the cable that came with TIVO and a null-modem adapter.

I don't keep the computer on all the time and have been making manual daily calls every week or so. Sometimes it works. About half the time, however, I get an error message on the TIVO when it tries to connect that the service is not available ("Failed. Service unavailable."). I can click onto the incoming connection on the computer and see that data is being exchanged, but that is the limit of my technical know how. When I try the connection the next day it always seems to work.

Is this somehow an issue on my end or is the PPP connection simply not available at times? In other words, is this something I should just live with? I am hesitant to cancel the phone line when connecting via PPP is inconsistent, although I have not run out of program data yet.
