I have had the s3 for over a month now. And I have been having issues with the 8 sec button functions while watching my recordings.

The issue most noticably happening is that I will be ff through a commercial segment and when i see the show start up again, I hit the 8 sec button to start up the stop the ff and begin watching again. I did this everytime i watched shows on my s2 and had no issues.

With my s3 and I attempt this I have different issues occuring randomly for me.
1. sometimes, if im at 8 min into a hour show, i hit the 8 sec button and it will jump the video to 20-30 min into the shows progress.
2. Another major issue, which occured constantly last night, was i was 17 min into a show and ff through the commericals and when the commericals were done i hit the 8 sec button and it jumped me to the end of the recording, this happened atleast 5 times before i gave up and manually ff through them and then back tracked.

Is anyone else have these issues or related ones? Thanks in advance

Try just hitting the play button when you see the end of the commercials. The TiVo automatically jumps back a little to compensate for you. Usually, it does a pretty good job of getting the the right point. If you need to back up a little more, press the 8 sec. button after it is in play.

Not that this fixes the issue, but it is a workaround.

Yes, I have noticed something similar. It appears that if you press the instant replay button (8-sec back button) while fast-forwarding, it executes the advance button instead. I have the advance button re-programmed to do the 30-sec skip, so in my case it jumps forward 30 secs instead of jumping back 8 secs.
In your case perhaps you do not have the advance button reprogrammed to do 30-sec skip, so it is jumping forward to the next hash mark (e.g. the next 15 min marker)?
Not the same behavior as the S1 or S2, so this seems to be a bug.

I don't have the 30-sec skip programmed but what happens to me is that it often (seems random) doesn't go back 8 sec.... sometimes just a 2-3 secs. I don't know for sure but it might only happen on stardard def recordings? I have also noticed that the auto rewind when you hit play seems to be just as inconsistant. I been an owner/user of a series 1 since the first 30 hour units. these 2 issues are driving me nuts! :)

Is their a reason you don't just use the 30 sec. skip? This is one of the big reasons I got rid of my Cable DVR, and went back to a TiVo. There is no faster way to skip commercials.

Don't even know what the 8 second skip is. I use 30 second skip and tic.

He's talking about the 8s "replay" button.

I've used Tivo for years and always FF-FF-FF through a commercial set and then the 8 second back button to catch the beginning of the show's return. I just must not be quick enough to just use the play option (i've been trying that recently but I always seem to miss a bit). I'm personally on the fence about the 30-second skip feature - it seems that I tend to watch shows that have very long commercial blocks and repeatedly hitting the 30s-skip is a bit tiring.

Anyway, I've been running both with and without the 30-second skip feature turned on. I've noticed this in both modes and it doesn't seem to either move to the next mark OR the end of the show - it just jumps forward several minutes. Really strange.

It looks like others are having this problem and nobody has gotten an answer yet so I'll call it in to Tivo.

I called Tivo support. Someone took my information and claimed that it would be looked at. No possibility of any feedback on status, etc., but I did get a case number that I can call back on and essentially not receive an update. No news on any expected release date of the new service pack. Very discouraging.

There is no faster way to skip commercials. There actually is a 30 second skip for some of the cable DVR's. I found it accidently while searching Google and gave it to a friend to try out and it worked!

You can enable "30 second" skip on Comcast DVRs.
When you are watching a recorded show hit the 30 second
skip button, HD Zoom, 6 times and you are through the
standard 3 minutes of commercials:

1) Press the “Cable” button at the top of the remote to
put it into Cable Box control mode.

2) Press and hold the “Setup” button until the “Cable”
button blinks twice.
3) Type in the code 994. The “Cable” button will blink twice
4) Press (do not hold) the “Setup” button
5) Type in the code 00173 (for 30 second Skip)
6) Press whatever button you want to map the
skip - HD Zoom

I'm personally on the fence about the 30-second skip feature - it seems that I tend to watch shows that have very long commercial blocks and repeatedly hitting the 30s-skip is a bit tiring. If you do it long enough, you can guage how long the commercials are with most of the shows you watch. And it usually comes in blocks of 1 minute. So if 4 clicks aren't enough, then, 2 more.

When I watch hockey games, there is a 90 second break for commercials during play, almost without fail. So, I always know to hit the 30 sec. skip 3 times.

And when I'm working out every night, it is MUCH easier to use the 30 sec skip than watching diligently for the commercials to end. After a few years of using it, I'm addicted.
