Good morning.

Just wondering what the format button on the front of the S3 is for. Haven't found any information on it yet.

Thanks.

It's so you can change the video output format generated by the TiVo's component and HDMI outputs without having to see an on screen menu.

Aw, man...I wanted to say that it formats the hard drive and turns poor TiVo into a paperweight. :p

I'm not sure what it does, but you must press it every 108 minutes.

108 minutes? I was told it's 96 minutes!

I pressed it for the first time the other day and was glad I finally found a way to get the front display to display that weird oval/rectangle box that says "1080i" or whatever that I'd seen in so many pictures.

It wasn't a big deal but cool nonetheless.

I'm guessing you don't watch "Lost" ....

I had no idea there was an actual button on the front of my TiVo HD.

I have been running mine at 1080i Fixed so that I wouldn't see those little video glitches over HDMI when changing between resolutions of the programs or menus. It started doing that again yesterday, and asked my wife if the TiVo had rebooted or something. She said she saw our daughter push a button on the front. I was incredulous: what button?!

A front panel button I had never noticed, hiding in plain sight. Good grief.:p

The "format" button is very useful if you have changed the display format to something your TV won't display, so it would be rather difficult to navigate the menus you can't see. Sort of like the classical one about booting a PC and getting the error message "No keyboard found. Press any key to continue."

And LOTS of computer-knowledgeable people saw a "format" button, and said "No way I want to press that button and format the hard drive!".
