I just got my S3 and am setting it up with my S1 in same room. I got into manual and tried the switch setup using the new remote, I get it to light up as they say but when I push the one followed by right arrow nothing changes on screen, on each. Both still say 0. Can I even do this on an S1? What happens to my old S1 remote without a switch? All I hear is a bong when I try, on both Tivos. The right arrow thing is the only key not defined in the picture inside cover of manual, it is the one next to select, right? You push the one and then the arrow, right? They sure made it hard to understand and do, anyone done this with one S1 and one S3?

If I remember correctly, I think I used the Advance button (->|) as the 'right arrow' when I set up my S3 and S2 in the same room.

Code 0 allows the set to respond to all codesets.

I think what you need to do is first set the S1 and the remote to Code 1. Be sure to cover the IR input on the S3 so that it does not get changed. I use some duct tape and heavy paper to be sure nothing gets through. Follow the same directions to change the original S1 remote to Code 1 so it will also work; this will come in handy for unforseen problems.

Then, when you are sure that this is done correctly and both remotes operate the S1 on Code 1 (check System Info to verify the codeset), throw the remote switch to the other position, block the IR on the S1, and change the code set on the S3 to Code 2.

As far as I know, all TiVos have the same 9 code sets available, except for the Sonys, which have 4 code sets, which are not the same as any of the 9 TiVo codesets.

This should work unless your S1 is a Sony, in which case you will need a universal programable remote to control them both. Otherwise, I think the S3 remote can be set up to control both the S1 and S3, as long as you get them off of code 0.

I set up my S3 remote to control the S3 and an S2. It was very difficult tho. The IR receivers of both units were VERY sensitive... you have to do a really good job in covering them up.

Plus, follow the directions EXACTLY in order.

I am using a series 2 and the series 3 right next to each other and was able to assign a remote address to both. However, I could never get the address assigned using the series 3 remote, I had to assign them using the series 2. Same with the 30 sec. skip, have to use the series 2 to set.

Thanks, tried your ideas and finally got it to say 1 on old and 2 on new Tivo, looks like you do use the advance button and NOT the right arrow at all so is wrong in manual, also you have to press the buttons while remote is red and after as well for it to change on screen. That lets me use the new remote for either Tivo. The old S1 remote still changes both so just has to be put away, there is no switch on it so no way to program it. It seems odd the S1 even lets you change codes, I guess they planned on later ones having remotes that can change? Anyway, it sure is written poorly in the manual by someone who never did it.

The S3 remote works just like a S2 remote. I used it to set the remote code on both of my S3 units, no problem.

The absolute easiest way to fix this is by following these instructions....

1) Unplug one of the TiVos.
2) Click the DVR switch into position #1 and set the remote to code 1. You do this by covering the end with the palm of your hand, holding TiVo and Pause until the LED stays lit, then hitting 1.
3) Now navigate the TiVo which is not unplugged to the System Information screen and press Channel Down a couple of times until you can see that the code has been changed to 1
4) Now press the TiVo button to get out of the System Information screen
5) Click the DVR switch to position #2 and change the remote code on the remote to 2 using the same technique above.
6) Plug the other TiVo back in.
7) When it comes up navigate it to the System Information screen and press channel down a couple of times until you can see that the code on the TiVo has changed to 2.
8) Press the TiVo button to get out of the System Information screen.

Your TiVos are now set to different remote codes. The one thing to be really careful of is never leave either TiVo in the System Information screen. Because if you do and then try to use the other TiVo the code will be reset and you'll end up controlling both TiVos with the same code.

I'm glad that you got the new remote working, but:

If the older remote is working both devices, even though those devices are set to different codesets, then I think that you did not change the code in the older remote; if it is still set to send out code 0, then it may be controlling all codesets. You might want to check that out.

. . . and it's not odd that the S1 lets you change codes; that's to allow for multiple devices in the same room, each controlled by its own remote. The downside is that a different remote would have to be used for each device (which is why the codeset has to be changed on both the device and on the remote). The newer remotes with the A/B switch allow for one remote to control two devices, although it's still no substitute for a good universal remote that controls everything.

Thanks for the correct instructions, I would never have been able to do it with the manual's. I did get the older remote to change to a 1 so it only does the older Tivo which I would not have thought of with no switch on it. Now on to hooking up some more things....

I also nearly went nuts trying to set my 2 remotes. I finally read somewhere on this forum to set one tivo, then get out of the menus competely to keep the 1st one from resetting when you do the second. (my problem was, I would set one for Tivo1, then when I set the 2nd as Tivo2, the first one would ALSO reset as Tivo2.

I finally set the Tivo series2 as Tivo1, then unplugged it, and set the Tivo series 3 as Tivo2....... then plugged the Tivo series 2 back in. If you know what I mean! I leave the old remote set for that Series 2, and the new one set for the new Series 3, I use both remotes.

Unplugging them seems to be the safest method.

Also the one least likely to drive you nutz. :D
