Question: Can I use a Directv remote on my Direct Tivo ? it is a Hughes dvr80. It came with the peanut remote but I am using this tivo in my bedroom and I would like to have his and her remotes.

The remote is the generic Directv remote. the top is white and it has the av1, av2, and tv switch on the top.

If the answer is yes, how do I program it? Thanks

OK, I searched the forum and found that I could re-program the generic white remote by switching it to av1, holding down the mute & select button until the remote blinks twice and then entering code 2-0-6-1-8. Worked like a champ..

I should search more often but then I would not be able to talk to myself in these threads...

If you have the white remote with format key under the TV input key, then the tivo codes are 01442 & 01142. If you have rc16 and it missing the format key, then you can only control the tivo partially using code 20618 on either AV1 or AV2 devices. Partially because keys like GUIDE are locked to the DTV device, on the rc16 it only accepts sat codes 00001-00004 on the dtv device. Those codes are only for the D10 and subsequent models directv receivers.

thanks a bunch. I had found the manual for the RC-16 on DirecTV's site and tried the DVR-80 codes and no luck. So will generic remotes found at Best Buy and the like work to control a DVR-80 with all features or must I search for a specific remote? I actually have a DVR-120 with the remote (I got the DVR-80 off Ebay) and it works the DVR-80 just fine. But they are in separate rooms and I need a second remote.

the rc16 won't accept ANY codes for directv receivers other than directv branded nontivo models.

fortunately, as described above, it will accept the VCR codes for TIVO brand "vcr" on AV1 or AV2, and work just fine for TIVO

any other "white" directv remote will work with the "receiver" codes, but the RC16 is not as "universal" as other models.

This goes for any "white" directv branded remote that does not have a "format" button.

Is there any way at all to get to the GUIDE with the RC-16? I have tried going through the menu button but could not find a way.

Sorry, but no. The key is locked to the dtv symbol device.
