View Full Version : MyDVD Ver 8 Very Sluggish - Memory Issue?

I recently installed MyDVD Ver 8 so I can burn some of my Tivo recordings to DVD. I am running a 3.0 GHz Prescott at 3.75 GHz (250 MHz FSB) and have 1.0 Gig RAM. Even with all this horsepower MyDVD is very sluggish. Would increasing memory from 1 to 2 gig have any consequential effect on performance?

I have an older mother board (Abit IC7-Max3) that I plan to upgrade in a few months. This mobo uses 184 pin memory sticks so I would prefer not to buy more RAM since any new mobo will probably use 240 pin DDR2 sticks. However, if increasing my memory to 2 Gig will consequentially improve performance, I will gladly do it.

MyDVD (and most DVD authoring programs) will re-encode any video you give it unless it already happens to be DVD compliant. (See VideoHelp.com (http://www.videohelp.com) and look at DVD in the "What Is" column on the left, and look at the NTSC DVD video specs.) This can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours per hour of video depending on various factors.

See this ***Thread*** (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=300614) for lots of info on authoring from TiVo and search for the posts by Dan203 (and I humbly add: dlfl, i.e., me) to see a method that will not re-encode, i.e., is very fast. The catch is you may be making a non-compliant DVD that way and some players will not play them. You also need to get VideoReDo, although it's well worth the price. You can try this method for free. VideoReDo is the only cost and you get an uncrippled trial for 15 days. I have been using the MyDVD in Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 and I guess it's OK but I have a lot more experience with the Dan203 method and variations I've posted.

Have you looked at the Sonic/Roxio forums?

More memory will probably make little difference. Check the performance monitor in Windows Task Manager while MyDVD is processing a DVD. Fast disk and lots of it and reading from one disk while writing to another will speed things up. Processor speed does matter.

For additional help please post the specs on your video files and what settings you have tried in "Project Settings" in MyDVD.
