Can this be done? Do all they make you do is buy a new card? Can I reuse a card? If I want a new HR10-250 where can I get it?

You should be able to move a card from an existing unit to the HD one, if the unit you are moving it from is reported by you to be broken and/or you get lucky and find a willing rep. You may have better luck with the second half if you call Retention or ask to be transferred to the Access Card group. Make sure the box is listed as an owned unit and not a leased one when they are done.

If you remove the SD box you stole the card from, make sure that it is either not the primary all your other boxes are mirrored from or that they set another box with the primary box flag. They forgot to do this for me and I lost service on all the boxes since they had nothing to mirror from.

Forum sponsor Weaknees, or look on eBay, or look at ALL the stores in your area that deal in DirecTv to see if they still have one on a shelf

Just figure that if you buy a used one from someplace you'll have to pay $20 or so to get a new access card from DIRECTV. That's the DIRECTV policy.

That's better than calling DIRECTV and saying - What do you mean I have to get a new access card from you !! LlamaLarry on the TiVo Community forum told me I don't have to !!

So they will still activate a used one. I was not sure with all this leasing stuff going on if they would still activate a used on bought on ebay.

Yes, I activated a used one last week (and migrated a card from an existing unit I took offline). Used box appears as an owned unit on my statement. 2 normal reps, 2 access card reps were not willing to migrate the card, but 1 call to retention took care of it with no begging/threatening. $20 + 3-5 business days to get a new card so I can pay DirecTV a monthly fee just seems asinine.

I activated a used one purchased from Craigslist Friday as well. The first CSR I spoke with said I would have to get a new card, so she transferred me to the "access card group" to set that up. When she transferred me, I played dumb and said I just got a new receiver and needed to transfer a card from an old receiver. They did it without a problem.

Make sure when buying a used unit that the previous owner has deactivated the unit. DirecTV will not send you a new card if the unit is still active on another account. Also make sure to activate the new card right away. After 9 days the card will be deactivated and you will need to order another one at another 20 bucks.

I just got one off of eBay myself and have a related question. Any chance of getting retention to credit me all or part of the equipment cost? Any thoughts on strategy for this?
