I got a new DirecTivo unit for my father; I have the older Samsung one. This new device is terrible. The way it is laid out. The functions are difficult to figure out even for someone who has had the old Samsung Direct TV unit for years. Does anyone have any ideas on if one can get everything with DirecTv and use a non-Directv-tivo unit without paying more than one monthly fee or what???

I have no idea what you are really asking? What model DirecTiVo did you get? What kind of non-DirecTV-TiVo unit are you referring?
BTW, there' s no need to ask the same question twice!

From this other thread I assume you got an R15.

I'm guessing that you actually got a DirecTV DVR (R15 or HR20), not a DirecTV/Tivo DVR. The new DirecTV DVRs do not use Tivo software anymore. You can still find DirecTV/Tivo DVRs at a few online retailers and on eBay.

To the OP, you should really clarify what the new unit is that you got for your father. If the unit looks like http://ebonovic.dvrcommunity.com/R15/Images/IMG_002_FrontFull.jpg and the remote looks like http://ebonovic.dvrcommunity.com/R15/Images/IMG_014_access.jpg, you got an R15. Another telltale sign of the R15 and its NDS software: http://ebonovic.dvrcommunity.com/R15/Images/IMG_035_MyVod.jpg.
The R15 is NOT a DirecTiVo and doesn't have any TiVo software on it.

If you want to use a straight DirecTV receiver with a Standalone TiVo, you have to separately pay the going Standalone service rate for that TiVo.
