View Full Version : What Happens When You Run Set Up Again After Cable Install

I'm just curious. After cable card install what happens if you run the set up again? There is one channel I don't get though I do get a signal and that's the Hallmark channel. I get a grey screen no sound, picture but a 94 signal. I thought about running set up again to see if that drags it in but it's not an important channel to me and I don't want to blow everything I do have for one insignifigant channel. It is suppose to be in my package.

You will probably lose the guide info as it will attempt to refill it, but otherwise, you won;t lose any saved shows or season passes.

I would think that the concern is over losing the Cable Card settings. I'd make certain those wouldn't change before I did anything. As for season passes and wishlists, those remain intact on S2 devices unless you do a clear and delete. The S3 shouldn't be any different.

...and here I thought you were supposed to run Guided Setup again after a CableCARD install. How else is it going to get the new channel lineup together to pull guide data for? As far as I can tell it doesn't disrupt anything as far as card settings or scheduled recordings. Season passes may need to build up in the todo list again, but I'm thinking that would be all.

On the other hand, if the missing channel is one you don't care about, just uncheck it in the channel list. That way it wont annoy you by being in the guide :)

I installed the CCs during guided setup (there's a place where it asks about CCs - did it there). I ran guided setup again a couple of days later. I was trying to see if it would fix something - don't remember exactly what. It didn't affect much of anything - I think it even remembered which channels I had deleted from the list.

While I agree with everyone that it probably wouldn't hurt, this is the suggestion I've been inclined to do anyway. Just remove it. Why mess with a good thing over something that isn't important.

For me, guided setup without the cablecards didn't show channels above 100 (just the analog expanded basic lineup). After my cablecards were in and working (per Test Channels) I re-ran guided setup, and I'm fairly sure I answered the "what's on channel N" questions identically. Now it lists all of the digital channels (including many on higer tiers that I don't get; I have the lowest digital tier, equivalent to expanded basic but with a few HD channels). No problems with the cablecards since then, including on some channels with protected content.

I have personally repeated Guided Setup several times with the CableCARDs installed and it has absolutely no negative effects. It's 100% safe!

That being said I highly doubt rerunning GS will fix your problem. GS does nothing but pull in the data for your channels. The actual mapping and authorization of the channel is handled by the CableCARDs themselves, and dynamiclly updated, so the problem is on your cable companies end and when/if they fix it the TiVo will pick up on it automatically.

Agreed. But since I'm seeing a signal there of 94% it sure seems strange.

Have you tried to view that channel through another input on the TV? Maybe through component? Maybe it's an HDCP issue.

edit: Try to set a manual recording on that channel and see what messages you get.

Yes I tried to view it through my DVD recorder via composite. I got the same result.

The signal strength is not the problem. It's either an authorization problem or the CableCARD is mapping the channel to the wrong PID. Both problems are on the cable companies end and can not be fixed by you. I have the same problem on two of my channels, except instead of gray I get black because I changed the color of the pillars to black in the settings.
