I have a philips dsr6000. The hard drive recently went out on me so I got a new one and reinstalled. but know my tivo will only last for about an hour before the picture frezzes. I have done a clear and delete a software reinstall via the panic remote code, and even disabled one of the tuners. I called Dtv and there only advise is to replace it with one of there R15's (which I don't want). Any help I restoreing my Tivo would be great. Thanks

Are you sure the fan is still spinning in there? That could be the source of your initial failure as well.
Some people sell DSR6000 replacement fans.

Where did you get the image to restore to the new hard drive? Did you use the one on the failing drive? If so, it may have been corrupted.
If you didn't already do so, I'd use a clean image like one you can purchase from ptvupgrade.com
PRMan's suggestion of checking the cooling fan is good advice. Heat building up could cause the unit to shut down. A internal temp of 36-45C is acceptable.

The fan still is running but The cover has been off scince I started have problems with the unit. As for the Image I did get it off the failing drive as it did not die compleatly I could jut hear it was haveing problems and the I checked it with Spinright and it has a smart failaure but I ran it thru spinright and fixed the drive before I made the backup. Can you just buy the image from someone or do you have to buy the drive with it?

PTVUpgrade's InstantCake utility provides the software image you'll need.

Well I went ahead and downloaded the instacake and ran that thru. I put the drive back in the tivo and I am haveing the same problem. I can now access it via FTP but I don't see any errors in the kernel log.

My HD went south and it's setting on its shelf idle, so you're several steps ahead of me with the same DSR-6000. You didn't have to do anything hardware wise to be able to access via FTP??
What size HD is your replacement?

A couple of ideas:
The problems with DSR6000s are usually related to hard drive, power supply, or ribbon cables. You replaced the hard drive, so make sure the flat white ribbon cables have clean connections and are seated properly. While you are at it, make sure that the ide cable is also seated properly and you may want to replace the old hard drive ide cable with the one that likely cam wiith your brand new hard drive.
If it's a bad power supply, you would need to have it repaired or replaced. At this point you might just as well get a used dsr6000 off ebay to replace yours.

russwjohns, well I have a tivonet card installed in my unit that I've hade for a long time. and my replacement drive is only a 40gb because the one I orderded didn't work and I had this one just sitting around.
I went a head and called Dtv for a replacement, and I asked If there was any way of getting a Tivo unit the lady said she did have that option to send me one if I aggreed to a 2 year comintment and pay the shipping. So we'll se what come's.
Thanks for all the help.

Let us know what they send you. Maybe they still have "warranty" stock on the R-10's. And thanks for the info on your mod'd unit.

no luck. Directv sent a R15, but without a new card which they say all the R15's need to be activated so now I have to wait for a new card.
What are your thoughts on the R10 Directivo units?

Best to search the forums here for R-10 posts on satisfaction/problems.
Like you, I would like to get my DSR-6000 back up and have been seeking an image file for a replacement drive. If you have the test area space, try blowing a small table fan into your open chassis to see if the problems persist. Be sure you have good air flow over the powersupply and pcboards.
