Do I have to sign up for the service to get it to work properly?

Yes - otherwise it is pretty much useless.

Thank you, I just have another question-if I purchased something other than tivo will it work with my cable company's program list?

Do I have to sign up for the service to get it to work properly? Some models have tivo "Basic" service included with them. No charge for the Basic.

If you was wondering, if you could get another DVR. Which could work without a Sub, yes you can.

The way TiVo sets records by the name of a show, "the time/date can change without TiVo missing a recording". Then wishlist lets you catch that Movie or Show you always miss no matter what channel it's on.

Those 2 things, makes the TiVo rise above the competition.

If you mean something other than a TiVo DVR (which by virtue means a subscription to the TiVo service), yes, there are a number of non-tivo DVR products you buy their hardware, or software for a PC with the appropriate hardware installed, and if necessary, subscribe to their service.
