View Full Version : Is MRV faster than Tivotogo over wireless?

Just bought the Series2 DT and I am thinking about adding a 2nd Tivo in the bedroom for MRV. On wireless home network.

However, when I transfer a show via Tivotogo on my PC. I am noticing it takes about 13 minutes to transfer 10 minutes of programming. It's almost not even worth at that point to me. sitting there waiting for the show I find it does not really accomplish what I want.

I guess I must be too demanding because I think the tranfer is way too slow and I would not buy the 2nd box if this is the speed?

Does anyone think the MRV with wireless is faster than wireless with Tivotogo or is the same? If it's the same, what can do to make the transfer happen faster?

I don't want to spend the cash if this is the reality in terms of transfer speed.

Please let me know. Thanks.

The two are probably about the same. If you want to increase speed somewhat, try the TiVo wireless adapter. It is custom made for the TiVo to help increase transfer speed.

I forgot to mention that I am am using the Tivo branded adapter. Still think the transfer is quite slow.

And am wondering if I go to wired solution if it would speed things up? If so, how much?

If it's possible I suggest going the wired networking route with your TiVos. We do MRV and we hardly notice that we're transferring. It makes both of our TiVos seem as if they were one machine.

I have both wired adn wireless TiVo adapters. My 240 upsatirs has wireless and can tranfer a show at better then realtime via TiVoToGo and will MRV to a wired DT at 3x realtime (10 mniutes for a 30 minute show) and MRV from DT to 240 is about 2x realtime (15 minutes for 30 minute show)

MRV is most definitley faster than TTG due to some remuxing of audio that TTG does that needs TiVo CPU time. MRV is just a straight copy.

If you see the same speed for MRV and TTG than the network is a bottleneck for both. You may want to try a newer wireless router. I am using the Linksys draft N router (WRT300N) but any made in the last year or so G router will probably speed things up - or else repositioning the wireless gear to find a better sweet spot can yield results. perhaps you have a cordless phone in use a lot or other interference as well?

my house is'nt wired though. my basement is finished but i have a drop ceiling. how much would it cost to hire someone to run a cable from my family room to my bed room?

Depends if you hire a real contractor, or "some kid", and the going labor rates in your area.

MRV is a LOT faster than TTG transfers. MRV is much less CPU intensive than TTG so transfers happen at a much faster rate. On my network, I can transfer High quality or less shows at more than real-time speed using 2 tivo branded adapters. Best quality is slightly less than realtime but still pretty close.

I think MRV trransfers way faster than TTG.

you mean wireless MRV is much faster than Tivotogo, right?

Assuming identical paths, MRV > TTG. (you didn't mention whether your TTG was all wireless as well - TiVo AND PC)

If only the TiVo is wireless, and the PC is connected to the router, you are avoiding having your home router handle more than one wireless device, which results in better performance. When you compare that to two TiVos wirelessly MRVing among themselves, I wouldn't COUNT on it being quicker because your router will be dealing with BOTH wireless devices simultanesouly. If one TiVo were wired (just like the PC), then yes, MRV > TTG.
