Frustrating Black Box on Cetain Channels

This is killing me. Series 2 tivo with Directv (not a series 2 directv box in one). On certain channels, specifically PBS, NBC and channel 5 (in socal) I get a black box on screen during programming. The black box is the size of channel guide. Sometimes their will be some letters inside the black box. If I turn off tv and turn back on the box goes away only to reappear moments later. Taking tivo out of the loop there is no problem concluding that tivo has something to do with this. On a recorded show from one of those channels the same thing happens but not during the commercials???? The black box appears during the show and dissappears during the commercials. It's killing me as NBC and PBS get alot of my tv time.

Sounds like you have closed captioning on (probably set to Text). Use your original remote to turn it off.

Thanks Rainwater. That was it. I have removed the noose from my neck...
