like a question thats been asked a thousand times over.
I have a thomson tivo, standard, nothing added with a 40gig HD and with a lifetime subscription.
I purchased a few weeks ago a Tivo, standard with an 80gig HD in it but with no subscription.
I wish to put the 80gig drive into my own tivo thus keeping the lifetime subscription.
Is it simply a case of putting dropping the hard drive in? Is not the service information (lifetime) contained on my hard drive and the mother board of the Tivo and must match? Or is it a question of my putting the 80 gig drive in, running through the Guided setup again and allowing it to dial in to tivo taking the data from my mother board when looking for subscription details on the dial up and letting it do it's stuff and which point when finished all will be well and i'll then have an 80 ig drive?
Or do i need to do something else?
Also, if at any point i want to put the 40gig back in can i just drop it in and let it dial up for an update and it would work the same?
Or am i way off base?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
If you drop the 80GB drive into your lifetime subscription machine it will work fine as a lifetime box.
You will need to run a guided set up again if the previous owner's set up differred from yours e.g. if you're on cable and they were on Freeview + if they lived outside your region you may need to change the postcode for any variations.
If you put the old 40GB back in then it will work fine as before.
In both cases expect a longer phone call than normal as there will be several days worth of data to download not the usual 24 hours or so.
For what it's worth - that 40GB drive will be >5 years old if its original and 80GB is pretty small for a modern drive suggesting an older upgrade too - I put 120GB in mine >4 years back when they were under £100.
If you have access to a PC then I would run the manufacturers diagnostic to make sure it isn't suffering from errors (usually downloaded to a bootable floppy or CD).
You could of course buy a large blank disk and do your own upgrade or buy a preconfigured disk from the people who do them at www.tivoheaven.com or www.tivoland.com and get a lot more space.

Also check that both TiVos are on the same software version. If your 80gb drive has software 2.5.5a and the 40gb one has 2.5.5 then you will run into problems.

How do i do that? Is it on the menu held on the Tivo?

Initially i was going to purchase a 250gig samsung, i may still do that but i also have a Topfield box with a 250gb drive and a dvd recorder with a 250gb drive all on the same system so i guess i don't really need much more than 80gb.

The 5400rpm HA250JC is considerably quieter in terms of hum and vibration and runs a lot cooler too :)
