Can recorded programs be downloaded to a laptop via a USB port on the back of the tivo or any other way besides wireless?

If you have a regular Series2 box, just get TiVoDesktop (http://www.tivo.com/4.9.4.1-2.asp) and use TiVoToGo.
TiVo supports wired adapters, not just wireless. But if you're asking if you can just hook up an external drive to the USB port and dump shows onto it ... no.

I do not think there is a way in there to get the shows direct to some device via USB. You still have to have a PC involved

Yes it can be done. USB Storage driver has to be insmodded and then you can mount a filesystem off the USB hard drive.
People have already done it.

cool
- now is this just extra storage or can that drive be unmounted and then used elsewhere ? I guess the drawback to the general public though is that the drive can not be read by a windows or Mac PC? or can it?

It can be unmounted, however using FAT16/FAT32 is not advised, so therefore it is suggested to use a ext2 Filesystem, so then you have to get it mounted on your PC in whatever fashion you see fit.

YMK, even if you can mount a USB drive, there is no easy way to tell it to copy a certiain program to a drive.
Easiest is to use one of the methods that works over the network, and if you aren't hacking your S2 Standalone, is only T2G.
