Tivo connect to a large network?

I searched around and couldnt find anything to answer my question. I am in college and have my Tivo hooked up (i use the phone line to update), but would like to transfer shows to my laptop. When I try to connect the Tivo to the Ethernet plugs in my dorm room the Tivo says it cannot detect an Ethernet link. Is there some reason why I cannot use the school network? If so, is there another way to transfer.. maybe using a crossover ethernet cable? Thanks.

I had this problem too a couple of years ago. I can't remember what system they used, but my school required every new MAC address to sign in with your student ID/password before it would let you online. And since this isn't possible from TiVo, I got around it by using a cheap router and plugging my Tivo and computer into it. Once I signed in, the network recognized the router's MAC address from then on and would let anybody connecting through my router online without signing in, including Tivo.

Some schools are Nazis though and require you to have Norton AntiVirus, Novell BorderManager and ZENworks in order to make sure your computer isn't going to contaminate others. If this is the case, then you're SOL.
