View Full Version : Rules Reminder - Put Air Date in Thread Title

Yes, I'm a thread-starting copy-cat!
I've been seeing many threads recently that are breaking one of the TV Show Talk forum rules - the rule about naming a thread that discusses an episode. Too many thread titles lately have only had something like S03E02 next to the show name.
Official Episode Threads:
When starting a discussion about a specific show episode, please put the air date and name of the program (and title if you know it) in the subject line. (ie: Lost, “Man of Science, Man of Faith,” 11/16.) And since most of us have TiVos here, when starting a thread, how about hitting INFO, looking at the episode title and also posting that in the subject? This is really helpful when there are several threads for different episodes of the same series.
Thanks, and peace y'all.

Personally I think the original air date is somewhat useless -- especially with cable channels and with imported shows (like Doctor Who); I'd much rather have the season/episode if I could only have one. That'll be much more enduring for discussions that occur beyond the few days around the original air date. For a long time too many threads basically had nothing more than a show name, often abbreviated, and a date, often without even the year.
In reality, of course, there's almost always room for both, as well as the full title of the show rather than some ridiculous fanboy-decodable abbreviation, and the full title of the episode. So everybody can be happy with thread titles.
Long ago I saw this format as pretty common around here and have kept to it myself:
ShowName OriginalAirDate (SnnEnn) "EpisodeTitle"
For example: Lost 10/11/2006 (S03E02) "The Glass Ballerina"
Since most people are at their computer when posting a new thread (:)), going to a site like www.epguides.com for the appropriate season/episode and episode title is pretty simple to do.
Now what'd actually be really nice is if the moderators could fix up thread titles done poorly. Maybe more people would make the effort to be complete when it was noticable that there was a common standard format people usually used. For that matter, I could make that happen with a script... :p

no one should have to work at it. I think the rule posted with just name and date are fine for us mere mortals and no doubt the mods thought that was all we could handle too :) I dont know how you could think OAD is useless. Even 5 days later, if you say Nip tuck 11/10 i'm probably gonna remember it. If you wrote Nip tuck Iwanna Tuck and no date, i would have no idea if it was last week or last month. (though first post date would give it away i'm sure.
Heck sometimes I dont start a show thread for a day or 2 after (bones or 7th heaven type stuff) and no way can i remember the title nor am i motivated enough to find it.

Ya title and date are fine with me, the (S02V4.5 Mod51/2) means nothing to me. And since I am not at my Tivo when I post ( normally at work) don't have that info anyway, or feel like looking it up at another website.

I think we're lucky if we get people to put the date in the title. If they add the Season/Episode info that's gravy but I think the current air date should definitely be mandatory.
After we get aways into a season most of the time I really don't know what the episode number is so the date is absolutely neccessary for me to know what threads to read/avoid.
