I accept the premise of the first movie DVD, to wrap up the Ori storyline, but I question the time-travel concept for the second movie. The only good thing I see for that is maybe Janet will have a cameo ...

The first film will tie up most of the finale's loose threads. "It's the climax of the Ori story line,"

I don't like the idea that the end of the 10th season this spring won't wrap up the Ori storyline. Seems like a cheap way to get people to buy the DVDs.

On the other hand, this is pretty interesting news and one might hope that entire new seasons might be direct to DVD although that's probably not economical feasible at the moment.

So they can make ~20 hours (including commercials) of filmage per year now, but they'll only make, say 4 next year...and we get to pay for it.

*sigh*

I'll pay for them. I'd rather they were tv movies of the week, but I'll take them :)

and time travel...well, they've done that pretty well so far, so I'll wait and see what happens there :)

You can be sure we'll see Kowalski die again too.

I broke the cancellation news to my sons tonight, in light of the DVD movie news. They were completely crestfallen. At least we have the DVD movies to look forward to.

I wonder why they don't just try running a whole new season direct to DVD. Surely there's gotta be a fan base large enough to support such a thing. It can't cost that much to make this show. It's much more human drama than special-effects laden. Plus there's the whole international syndication market.

I think an article I read about SG recently, Brad Wright said it cost roughly $1Mil per episode at current production. So 22~ episodes and SG DVD's would need to make back $22 Million~ in DVD sales. I don't have any DVD sales figures but I doubt there are many, especially TV series, that have done that. Maybe if the content is new there might be higher than usual sales and SG does have a good fan base to work with but I'm not sure a VP would sign off on that.

If I had to guess, the straight to DVD movies are probably being budgeted around $2-3~Mil per. $6Mil~ is probably easier to swallow.

It's better than nothing and I'm glad we'll at least get a little something out of it and it's not a total loss. Not what I really want, but it's something.

Stargate SG-1 has been straight-to-video quality for a couple of years now.

I'd be willing to buy the straight to video DVDs if they did a season 11.

Not sure for how much, though.

You would think if they are willing to commit to this, they would just as soon do 3 or 4 "Stargate Special Event, Movie of the Week" type of things per year (which they could eventually release on DVD anyway), rather than going straight to DVD with them. They would have to be better than "Kraken: Tentacles of the Deep".

That is one thing I don't get. Why keep doing the super horrible Sci Fi Cinema movies instead of funding another season of their flagship show?

Probably cheaper.

Most of the "Sci-Fi Originals" are actually failed theatrical or direct-to-DVD movies that are getting dumped. I suspect that, small as the budget is for an episode of SG1, they could probably acquire several of the "Sci-Fi Originals" for the same price.

I'm sure SS Doomtrooper had a huge FX budget.

But my point is, no matter how small the FX budget was, Sci-Fi didn't pay it. The producers paid it, and when they couldn't get the movie shown anywhere else, they dumped it to Sci-Fi, probably for a ridiculously small fee.

I'm excited and saddened. I'm glad they get to continue in some capacity, but I'm upset because this means that they definately won't have another season.

I'll take anything I can get...so this is great news as far as I'm concerned...

They better be 'R' rated .. I want violence and naughty bits that made the show much cooler in the showtime days

It's frustrating that, each time in the past when they weren't sure they'd be picked up, they did an episode that would serve nicely as a finale... and now that they know they won't be picked up (or is there still doubt?), they apparently won't be doing that, and will leave us with a cliffhanger instead.

What about syndication? Might these movies serve as season 11 there?
