How can I change channels without a cable box?

I used to use the IR wire to the front of the cable box to change channels.

I recently moved and got a big new tv

Sony 46E2000 wega LCD (If anyone has one.)

Does anyone know the IR code for the TV or another way I can change channels with the Tivo without a cable box? I don't really care about not being able to record HD channels. Just want the basics.

Also is there a way to make it so I can surf while tivo records? I was thinking spliting the cable connection or some other way?

If anyone can help thank you :)

What brand/model Tivo do you have? If it's a Series 2 Tivo, it has a built-in cable-ready tuner. Just connect your cable TV coax to the Tivo's antenna input, repeat Guided Setup and specify your cable TV channel lineup. This way the Tivo doesn't need to control channel changes on anything (except itself).

If you split the cable TV coax, feed one cable to the Tivo and the other cable to your TV, then you can watch a different channel using your TV's tuner while the Tivo records something else.

Stand alone S1 Tivos also have a built-in cable-ready tuner.

As does the S3.

Thanks everyone for your help I guess I will be spliting the cable.

There's no need to split the cable actually. Just plug the cable into the tivo and wire the RF output into the TV. Put the tivo in standby mode to channel surf.

Needless to say my tivo still isn't changing channels.

This wouldn't be cause I haven't connected my Tivo in 30 days to the tivo network right? Since I moved I haven't connected it in about 2 months. I've still paid so as soon as I can get it back on my network I can download the newest whatever...

Right now I have a 1 to 3 way splitter. On the outs of that splitter I have 1 going to the Tv, and then 1 to the tivo. From the Tivo I have Svideo out to the TV. However the tivo isn't yet changing channels.

(Little did I know that I have to return this splitter since its not an HD one...) :(

Did you rerun Guided Setup to tell the tivo it's not supposed to use a box anymore?

Again, there's no need for the splitter.

I know I don't need the splitter but I'm pretty sure I'm still going to use one since the TV I use the orginal remote has features the tivo doesn't.

Thanks for your quick reponse.

Right, and you don't need a splitter if you're just using the coaxial cable connections. Put the tivo in Standby, and then you can use the TV remote to surf.

So, you put the tivo in standby while it's recording and then you use your TV's remote to control the TV's tuner and watch whatever you want to watch. No splitter necessary. HA!

Have you figured out yet that you don't need a splitter?

I don't have a stand by button on my remote. I don't think I have the orginal remote since it says directv on it...but it also says tivo on it.

You can get to standby in the menus. Not too convenient, so that's why many split the cable.

This is becoming more of a problem then I thought.

I went and got the splitter. The first didn't do HD, which wouldn't be a problem if I didn't watch things in HD but I do. So from what I was told else were I have to go buy an HD splitter that is powered. The one I have now says HDTV on it and isn't powered but drops 7Db which I'm guessing is just enough to mess up my HD signal.

I know the guy above is going to say (you don't need a splitter or someone else.) But all the times I have tried without a splitter it hasn't worked. I either get no sound or have to change to channel 3 or 4 to get sound. Also the splitter I had before works with my PS2 which I use to view DVD's so I really want to keep the splitter and not have to switch wires back and forth when I want to view DVD's.

I'm going to post a diagram of the setup. Isn't there a way I can just use S-video? as long as the tivo gets cable wire in?

This is how I want to set it up but I'm having problems.

My biggest problem right now is no sound on my Tivo recordings. I have extra ports Red white yellow wire ports I could use but don't have the wires. Would that fix the sound issue?

That could be because you're not paying attention. If you connect the Tivo to the TV's input with a coaxial cable you can put the tivo in standby (note that I didn't say "press the standby button") and tune the TV to whatever analog channel you want - provided it has an analog tuner - while the Tivo records something else.

WOW! just WOW!
You've got to be kidding.
You have the Tivo connected to the TV with only an s-video cable and can't figure out why you don't have audio?

Now we all know why this has been so difficult.

I did that, the tivo doesn't change channels. It says it is in the message box that pops up but its always on the same channel. Channel 4. I have sound but only to that channel.

Also when tivo is connected this way I cann't view HD channels.

Having just come to this thread I have to say it.
Did you read (and understand) the manuals?

This has to be a put on; no one could possibly be this dense. :(

The tivo isn't supposed to change channels when you have it in standby. The point of standby is to bypass the Tivo so that you can tune in the channels using your TV's tuner, leaving the Tivo to record whatever has been scheduled.

What model tivo do you have? Now that I think of it, I believe that at least some of the DVD models don't have this RF bypass function.

I'm not talking about stand by. How do I rerun the setup again? I've had this tivo working before just not with this current setup. (My tivo didn't come with any manuals.)

I'm trying to change channels when not in standby. I have a Series 2, not the orginal remote if that matters (direct tv remote).

I can't view HD when the tivo is between the cable and tv because i get more then a -7Db drop. (Even if I put the tivo in standby I'm still losing more then -7Db = no HDTV) (No I'm not calling the cable company to boost the signal.)

It doesn't seem like this tivo has an analog tuner, or its not working correctly, before I had it attached to a cable box and used the IR wire to change the cable box (This setup was really slow for changing channels).

Then you need to go here (http://tivo.instancy.com/external/UserGuides.aspx) to get one. You rerun Guided Setup in Settings->Restart or Reset->Repeat Guided Setup. You must repeat GS whenever your tivo setup changes, so that it knows that you have/don't have a cable box, what your lineup is, etc.

(No I'm not calling the cable company to boost the signal.)

okaaaaay.... um, any particular reason why not, if this is a problem?

The tivo will not even attempt to use the internal tuner until you rerun Guided Setup to tell it to do so.

You're being to soft. ;)

Try this:

Rerun Guided Setup!

My 60 year old mom got a new DT Tivo last week and even she knew that when she moved her old Tivo to a different TV without a box she would have to rerun guided setup.
