View Full Version : Studio 60 on HDTV - audio problem

I'm trying to determine if this was just my local station (KNTV-HD, San Jose/San Francisco), or if it was nationwide.

In the first few minutes of the 10/9 ep of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, the only audio was the background music and actors. Right around when the director's credit appeared, the image shrunk, and the main dialogue audio returned. I assume that the image shrinking was a switch from the HD feed to the SD feed (which had the correct audio the entire time).

Did anybody else watching this on HD (besides in the San Francisco/San Jose area) have this problem?

There was definitely a problem with the HDTV network feed for Heroes, which immediately preceded Studio 60. I listened to it in stereo, and all the audio sounded like it was recorded in a tin can. I heard from others that the 5.1 sound was totally trashed.

However, I just went back to look at the recording I had of Studio 60, and it sounds fine to me, nor did it drop to SD, so that was probably all your affiliate. :)

I can confirm the Heroes "tin can" audio issue, here in MA. I actually recorded Heroes twice, once OTA and once through the cable (just so we could compare and decide which way we wanted to go with our installation), and both had the problem. (Initially I wondered if that perhaps it was because I recorded them both -- sympathetic vibrations between the two tuners. :)) However, Studio 60 didn't have any significant problems by comparison.

Ditto here in MA (I'm very close to you of course, bicker). Heroes sound was so annoying; I couldn't understand a bunch of the dialog, like most of what the mind reader cop was hearing. Nothing wrong with S60 though.

I have had this problem in the past with other HD programs. Very annoying.

This week, the audio was incredibly low. I had to crank up the volume to be able to hear the talking. The TiVo beeps where correcpondingly loud, I think you could hear them 3 houses away (yeah, I know, I could have turned them off, but I did not want to bother, for just one show).

I had the problem here. Thought it was my new HD TiVo. Guess not.

Both S60 and Heroes sounded fine in Columbus--OTA--no reports of problems over at hdcolumbus.net either.

I thought this was going to reference the terrible audio mixing of Studio 60. There were six or seven lines last night that I had to rewind the Tivo and of those, I still couldn't understand two or three (it's such a pain in the ass to turn on CC in the Tivo. Why???) But it was still 5.1 and didn't sound like it was in a tin can. Just mixed poorly.

Over Comcast in Sunnyvale, CA, I had the "tin can" audio issue for Heroes and the completely missing audio track for the dialog (could hear background track, etc.) for Studio 60. The dialog came back later, but seemed to cut in and out for the rest of the show.

It must be 6.3a. Joking.

Audio was horrible on Heroes. I had no issues with Studio 60 other than it being vewy, vewy quiet. I thought we were hunting wabbits.

Audio on HD has been all over the place for me. All SD is so much louder than HD and the same HD program OTA, via cable and via D* can be much different from each other.

I'm wearing out my volume buttons.

No problems here in Tulsa area OTA.

Same problems here on Comcast. Love the show, but the audio made viewing impossible until more than half way through the show. For me, I guess its streaming off of the NBC website to catch up on things...

Has anybody seen these audio issues on other NBC shows - like SNL, the Today Show, and any others? HD versions, I'm talking about. WOAI in San Antonio has exhibited these issues for a while and I thought it was just a local HD technology problem. Maybe not!
