Every hack seems to run in the background, with no direct user interaction (via remote control).

The only visible hacks are the OSD, jpeg view etc, but they are one-way initiated from a network command...

Can you intercept remote control codes on a tivo?

Creating new menus is not possible. You can capture IR codes, and some hack use that to trigger actions, but my personal experience is that intercepting all the IR makes the TiVo unstable. YMMV. . I've written hacks which involved creating a fake entry in Now Playing and "playing" the fake recording triggers an action - the closest I've managed to get to creating a new menu.
