View Full Version : New Twist On Delayed Recording Start After 6.3 Upgrade

I've experienced multiple OTA programs with delayed starts recently. Here's a new one--I was recording Desperate Housewives last night and the beginning of the program was at 0:00 as if it started on time. However, it clearly did not capture the beginning. Also, the time bar showed the recording ended with about 30 minutes to go in the 1:01 schedule. It actually taped all the way to the ending but the total program time in the Play Now List showed 48 minutes. That means the program started 12 minutes late. I've not experienced this kind of error. My other programs with delayed start times actually shows the green time bar starting at a later point that 0:00.

Have you watched the recording? Perhaps you had an OTA outage, which would cause the recording to be truncated like that.

I have had that problem several times in the past. When it starts to happen, I know it is time to do a "clear and delete everything" to get the TiVo database size reduced. Another symptom is a recorded program will pause for a few seconds while watching it. Also, the time it takes to set a new recording will take 30 seconds +.

In order to keep my HR10-250 healthy and to avoid all these problems, I now do a clear and delete everything every 6 to 8 months.

But it's so much easier to blame 6.3.

Similar thing happened to me last night.

When I checked recording of Brothers and Sisters this morning, the time bar showed the show did not record to the end. But when I went out to end, the recording actually continued past the time it supposedly had stopped recording. Play Now info was also correct, i.e., showed it had recorded correctly.

But here's the kicker - I'm NOT on 6.3. (I've unplugged my phone line until issues are resolved). Other poster may be right - this is not 6.3 bug - just your normal HR10 flakiness.

After doing a Clear and Delete, what is left?
Thanks.

Since 6.3a, I have had several shows not record to the end WHEN I ADD TIME...I had 3 baseball games where I added 1.5 hours in case the game went beyond 3 hours and each time it stopped at the 3 hour mark...and no - the recording does not continue after the 3 hour mark...

For those of us in the bay area, it was not a TIVO problem. KGO 7-1 was having problems all night. I was watching the news at 11:00 and the signal would go out for 10 to 30 seconds at a time. It happened several times during the newscast. That's what was happening during Housewives and Brothers and Sisters as well. I recorded both of them as well and noticed the same thing. It only recorded about 48? minutes of footage, yet the ending was there on both of them. It was indeed truncated.

When I checked the HR10's signal meter during the news, the signal for KGO was strong and steady(88-92 everytime). It had to be a local issue with their equipment.

Curiously, a couple of hours later when I tuned back in to KGO, the picture was gone completely and the signal meter was at 0. They must of shut it off to fix the problem. It appears to be fixed cause the channel is fine now.

Hey PhysicalPresence
Experienced the same crappy signal during DH and ended up switching to the regular channel (7).

But on Brothers and Sisters, my recording was OK and complete, just the progress bar was incomplete. I figured it was my HR10 (which I fully expect not to be bullet proof).

Nothing, when the system powers back up after a "clear and delete everything" it takes you into the initial setup screen.

FYI: The TiVo database problem exists on V3 of their code. Sometime after that, TiVo fixed it with a release update. I don't know exactly which version fixed the problem, but it is fixed in V6.3.

Did you verify the original recording information in the guide.

I have seen some flakeyness (both pre 6.3 and post) for some sports. Like the Penn State/Northwestern game was in the guide for only 1 hr and the KC/Arizona game was not in the guide at all then showed up as starting at 1:30 ET (it was a 4pm game) that ended at 3 (no NFL games do that in any time zone). Both seemed to almost correct themselves.

I had the same problem, but with 3.1.5f: 95124.

I've noticed on OTA programs that don't have a full green-progress bar, that most likely it is attributed to signal breakups. I recently had a show (Prison Break, FOX OTA KTTV) that had a few signal breakups/screen freezes/audio dropouts. The progress bar only showed 57 minutes of recorded content. I figured that the other 3 minutes were lost to breakups since the program was on for an hour, and the green bar ended a few blocks before the allotted hour.

I've noticed (still on 3.xxx) that when I setup a HD show.....
that sometimes it will record only 57 minutes of a 1 hour show.

HOWEVER, when I FastForward to the end, the ending credits are playing around 57 minutes. Aka, Tivo did not miss anything.

So is Tivo smarter than we give it credit for?

.....

Another thing is that.......when I force a call-in, I see in the progress "Setting System Clock".
If you have your directv/tivo unplugged for a really really long time, can the clock get out of whack by a few minutes? I'm not sure, just speculating here.

.............

I've also seen sometimes where a football game was in the guide for 1 hour. Thus if you record it, and tack on an extra hour, it only records 2 hours. Human sense says "of course a football game is longer than 2 hours", but if the guide has it at 1 hour, and the extra tack on time is 1 hour, then you get 2 hours.
This has been very , very rare, but on occasion.
