View Full Version : ATSC interfeers with digital cable?

I was happy to report that everything ws working perfect with my S3 this moring. Both tuners were seeing all of my digital channels and the HD stuff.

Then... I started recording the football game from my off-air antenna. The S3 started acting up again. The digital channels were hit or miss (black screens).

I stopped the recording and tuned the tuner to the same HD channel from the Cable source. Everything now works perfect on both tuners.

This is so wierd...

Since I get all the nets on both Cable and off-air, I think I'll just re-do guided setup w/o the off-air for the time being.

So far I've had no more tuning digital problems since re-running guided setup and setting it up 'cable only'.

Sounds pretty odd to me and sure hope this is not the case. I will have my CCs installed tonight and plan on using ATSC still for all the network HD channels. So far I've been using the S3 almost exclusively for ATSC recordings without issue. Got my fingers and toes crossed that everything goes well and no ill effects arise.

I have similar problems to what Shawn describes... I have a couple of my Cable HD channels that won't tune occasionally. There is no error message - it actually thinks the channelis tuned - BUT there is no picture or sound.(I am set up for OTA as well) I hate to change to "Cable Only" because OTA HD picture quality is so good.

From everything I have read here, I have no doubts that there are some sort of tuner issues with the gray/black screens. I reported to TiVo and mentioned all the people with similar problems on this board, but they seem to want to blame the cable cards.

Someone else had this problem, he was using an amplified OTA ant. The thread said he should get an adjustable amp for his ant. or try it without the amp.

No amp here. $25 75U rat-shack antenna split 3-ways behind the TV (S3, TV's built in ATSC tuner, and stand-alone ATSC tuner that feeds the S2). Ironicly, the Cox connection to the S3 is amped though.

I also get an audio ground hum on the S3 since I had Cox installed. I'm looking for a ground loop isolator locally. They are about $50 online.

I would see if the ground hum goes away if you disconnect the cable. Also, I would make sure that there is a grounding block on your cable where it comes into the house. It should be tied directly into the same ground as your electrical service (breaker) panel. I'm not an expert, but that's how it's done on my new (3 year old) home. In my mind, it's better to eliminate a ground loop than isolate it.

Got my CableCards in tonight and my setup so far is working fine with both OTA & CableCards. Crossing all fingers and toes hoping that it will stay that way.
