View Full Version : Front Panel Color - different on my 2 S3 Tivos
rmracing

I have two S3 Tivos, just got my second one going today. My first one has an orange front panel display, and the new one has white. The orange one shows the clock at a decent level all the time, but the new on has a bright setting that only stays on for 3 seconds until I hit info again.
What's the deal here? Is there different software, or are there two different types of S3 Tivos?
Thanks,
Robby

White? Really? Weird. What's the manufacture date of each? Both of mine have orange and they both auto-dim the display after a few seconds.

The white one is the new one. How would I tell the manufacture date?
The white is much dimmer than the orange. I wonder if a cable came loose or something. It is strange.

compare the serial numbers. The newer one will have a higher number.
My S3 is orange and autodims. The white one may be an earlier unit with different hardware, or there might be a manufacturing defect in the LEDs.

Maybe the amber filter fellout :).

I have no idea about the white display, mine is amber. If you want the clock to stay brighter and not dim you can adjust the settings to do so.
Messages/settings - settings - displays - displays on the front of the DVR - clock - pick the setting you prefer dim, regular, bright, off

Or you could just read the date printed on the back.

Can you post a picture of the white display? I think that it would look cool. (of course I'd really prefer blue, but that's so insignificant it isn't really important)

OK, I'm either on some good crack or I got an update that made the bluish white turn orange. This morning, I went to look at it again and it was orange.
I still need my nightvision binaculars to read anything, but it's better than it was. It's also in a very bright room, so maybe I was colorblind last night.... but I swear the LCD was a bluish white.
Strange strange strange.
2 Moxi's replaced, 1 to go. I feel so much better.

On the video with Shannon that comes pre-loaded, the front display is green. Mine is amber.

Huh. I just bought a Series 3 today (that just got shipped in in the last few days, according to Best Buy) and it's amber.
The thing about the front panel I find odd is the little lights. They aren't mentioned in the manual AT ALL. I know the left two are for recording on the two tuners, but what are the right two lights for?

The only thing I've seen used is the orange one flashes when it detects a push of the remote button. The interesting thing is that on my side by side S2 and S3 with separate codes set, both lights flash but only the specified DRV responds. it really makes me want to stack up 3 or 4 more to see all of the blinking lights :D
I've seen pictures of a blue or maybe green light, but I've never seen it come on. There is also seemingly an output format light, but I've never seen that on either...

Yeah, I have two TiVos in front of me right now (my DirecTiVo and my Series 3) and I've noticed both of them blinking at the remote but only the correct one responding too (man am I glad I figured out the remote ID thing).
As for the lights, I know there are the four. The ones on the right are the amber one that blinks with the remote, and the blue one that does who knows what. Maybe when downloading an update or something it would show, or it may be to signal Dolby Digital or something.
I've got to say though, that OLED display is VERY cool.

I didn't know it was OLED. I like it even better now.

The manual says the blue light comes on when receiving a broadcast over the network connection. The output will come on if you press the little format button along the bottom front edge of the Tivo.

My new one is Yellow. Manufactured Sept 18.
My orginal one is Amber. Manufactured Aug 23.
Maybe it takes a while to warm up to amber.

Sounds like a manufacturing defect to me. I would probably exchange it if I were you, but I'm picky about those sorts of things. Both my S3 units have an amber colored front display.

I haven't bothered to figure out when they were made but my first one was amber/orange. My new one is yellow and not nearly as bright (with the settings configured identically) as the first one. Hmph. Not a big deal, at least not comparatively to CC problems I WAS having.

Thanks, I missed that in the book - I saw the format button today while I was putting my new receiver in the rack. :D
"broadcast over the network connection" is the Tivocast thing that the S3 doesn't have yet, right?

It's definitely dimmer during normal usage.
I might see if I can change em both to blue.

They can be changed to blue?!?!? I would LOVE to do that (for a really dorky reason...all my other devices in my entertainment stand have blue displays...it would improve the aesthetic)!!!

just FYI-
the remote reception light will basically blink to acknowledge any remote- doesn't even need to be a tivo one. Use your tv remote or cable box remote or whatever and it will blink. (at least if it's like the directivo's....)

my camcorder has an OLED color screen. I assumed that was the big fuss of the S3 OLED. But since it's monochrome anyway I dont see the big deal at all that it's OLED. Who cares of it's OLED or plain OLED- it's stinking monochrome and we cant pick the color- LOL.

There isn't a filter that dictates the color? I figured that was the case of the different colored displays?
I haven't opened mine yet, does anyone know if it can be changed?

dont know I haven't disected the front panel myself.
I have a new S3 and the OLED is yellowish/green, rather than the amber of the earlier ones.
Is this as designed or a defect?

Most likely supply/ordering irruglarities. If it records HD correctly, don't let it bother you :p

jfh3 - welcome to my hell ;).
It drives me nuts - especially when the two boxes are right on top each other.
I think the amber ones were the early ones. I much prefer the amber color.
I originally had two ambers and a yellow but one of the ambers died and it replacement was yellow. So was it's replacement - lol. Replacement #2 is holding up so far.

OTOH, it's easier to tell them apart. The amber one seems to be more visible.

I left the amber one in the family room and the yellow was relegated to the bedroom. Now, if we do get MRV, can I send the OLED colors to each other? :)
OK, I guess I won't worry too much about the new color. Sounds like it's not a defect - just took me by surprise. So I guess the it's in the OLED panel itself and there's not some sort of color filter missing.
But I too prefer the amber. I now have three S3s and plan to sell one at some point. Now I have to decide if I want two orange or one of each.
The difference in color still isn't as annoying as the fact that I can read the text on any of them from where I sit.

If you keep one of each color, you won't have to write #1 and #2 on the front to help you remember which one is which :D

That’s an issue that doesn’t bother me. As a combination of how far from my TiVo box I sit and my aging eyeballs, I can’t tell what color the display is. In fact, I can’t even tell what time it is displaying. Thank God for on-screen displays!

I can read it also from 12' away in my Living room. It's called LASIK. After wearing glasses/contacts for 30 years I had LASIK two years ago which gave me 20/15 vision. Although now that it's been a couple of years I'm down to 20/20 vision which is still excellent. I wish the same thing could be done to my hearing.

From what I understand from talking with a TiVo rep at the CES, the color was changed from orange to yellow for reliability reasons. The life hours on the orange was not that good, so they changed it to the yellow, because it will last a lot longer.

my orange display no longer works. I've had the tivo about 45days.
i've cycled through off/ bright / dim and nothing will display.
the front controls work and the LED will blink when I use the remote but the clock is DOA.
I've got to get caught up on battlestar galatica before I call it in.
Any suggestions here?

Power cycle the receiver, see if it says "Ready. Set. TiVo." during boot.
Or (if you have time) go through Guided Setup, there should be a small display at that time of the output resolution.

Look at Appendix A: Front Panel Reference.
Oddly enough, my manual doesn't have that section in Appendix A.
On further checking, it appears that my S3 was shipped with the Rev A1
Viewer's Guide, which doesn't have the Front Panel Reference pages.
The online PDF is Rev A2.
Anybody gotten TiVo to replace their VG with the new version?
Thanks.
