Not that I can really afford a S3 at the moment, but having to watching lost in SD this week was just final straw - with my finger hovering over the purchase button...

What will I need in order to connect the S3 to a set that doesn't have HDMI or Component in - just a DVI input (and SVideo, Composite, and RF, but those matter not). Will everything I need be in the box (ie, a HDMI -> DVI cable like the HR10-250's used to come with), or will I need to run out and buy something? (Adapter? Replacement Cable?). Replacing the TV's on my list, but I can only afford so much at a time.....

Thanks,

-Ken

The Series 3 comes with a set of Component video cables and an HDMI cable. It doesn't come with an HDMI to DVI adapter. If you have one already, it should work with the TiVo.

Just get an HDMI to DVI converter. It should cost you around 30 dollars.

Woah! $30??

You can get a 6 foot HDMI to DVI cable for $15. An adapter should be $6 or so.

I had to buy a HDMI/DVI cable for my hookup. I bought mine from TigerDirect, 6ft for 14.99 plus shipping. (www.tigerdirect.com)

I second the vote for monoprice. Fast shipping, low cost, high quality.

I just got a HDMI->DVI cable and an optical audio cable instead of a HDMI->DVI converter. The converter just adds too much depth to the plug.

No Component?? Strange.. Does your TV support HDCP? If it doesnt... you will be in trouble.

Also, I second the 'just get an HDMI to DVI cable'... and...

I have had really good luck with bluejeanscable.com. Their products are top notch. You almost don't give them enough credit because you plug in the cables once and they just plain work. Great cables.

Most cables "just work". even the $15 cables from Monoprice, or $20 DVI cable from Walmart.

If I had my way, I'd go out and buy all new everything's, but I just can't right now. If it turns out there's no good way to get HD out of the S3 and into the TV, then I may have to look for a cheap new HDTV. One piece at a time...

Well - Balls to the wall :) - A series 3 should be on my doorstep on Thursday.

I have no idea if my TV will like it, how well the S3 will accept my fairly crappy cable signal, how well it will handle the mediocre OTA signal strengths in my area, my local CC's policy/prices regarding cablecards, my local CC's success rate with cable cards, or even where I'm gonna put the damn thing (living room is torn up).

But ya gotta start somewhere :)

I had similar issues!

"fairly crappy cable signal"... my analog-only cable is pretty crappy. The S3 does the best job of any of my DVRs I'd have (multiple TiVos and ReplayTVs)

"mediocre OTA signal"... my S3 seems to be a much better tuner than my TV. On Sunday, when I got the S3, my TV was breaking up on CBS and FOX. I routinely could not get PBS if my antenna was oriented for the other stations. Now I get all locals rock solid (for 2 days at least).

You'll love it!
