I've had my HR10-250 since they first came out. Recent finance problems have caused me to slash a lot of expenses and the DirecTV bill is next in line. 90% of what I watch is broadcast channels anyway.

I also have a Series 2 TiVo that hasn't gotten much use lately. With the HR10-250 set on 480i output, the OTA HD channels actually look pretty good through the S2. I know they're by no means HD, but it's tons better than just using the antenna.

I was thinking of canceling DirecTV and just using the HR10 as a tuner for that S2. The problem is, I couldn't get the S2 to control the HR10 via IR Blasters (and the HR10 doesn't have serial ports). I tried the blaster codes for Hughes, DirecTV, and TiVo (with the HR10 set to remote address "0").

Is this even possible? Does anybody know what the five digit IR blaster specific code would be that I could manually enter it in the advanced settings during initial setup?

Probably not going to work. First problem you're going to have is that your S2 won't change the HR10's digital sub channel even if you could get it to change. S2's aren't designed to change local channels on HD receivers, believe me, I tried getting my S2 to change the digital channels on my Samsung 360. Your best option is to drop your DirecTV programming to bare minimum and use your HR10 normally.

AFAIK there are no codes for a SA TiVo to control another DVR such as the HR10. Sorry.

I'd cancel the SA subscription and apply that to the DirecTV subscription.
Give DirecTV a call and they may actually set you up with the lower rate subscription that isn't advertised. (Not sure what it is called.)

The other issue is that dual-tuner boxes don't slave to outboard recorders well. Typically that involves the recorder blindly recording the STB output, which works OK (sometimes) for a single-tuner box, because those usually always output the same video they are recording (E-to-E mode). A dual-tuner box does not.
