View Full Version : The wife likes the S3 so much....

Honestly, I got a bunch of dirty looks from the missus when the S3 showed up and she saw the price tag.

After 3 weeks of her using it, she asked me last night if we could buy another one for the bedroom. Being married for nearly 20 years, that's the most exciting things that's been said in there for years.

It's one of the few things my wife has approved of as well. The SA 8300 was getting a lot of partial recordings and we had D-TiVo 2 years ago in Northern Kentucky.

It didn't take a great deal of arm twisting to get her to go along with it. :)

My wife loved it for three days.

Then I told her the price.

She said that's outrageous.

Love is fickle.

Sure.

Mine is thrilled.

Went from two remotes that required input changing to watch SD Tivo vs. HD TV (result: she had stopped using Tivo and didn't use the cable DVR)

to one simple (and familiar) Tivo remote and *no more switching inputs.* (which she never did anyway.)

I like the one remote selling point

My wife thinks its pretty much the same as the HR10-250. She's noticed the channel line up is different, which is cable vs Sat rather than TiVo vs TiVo. We don't get East and West feeds of some channels we used to (cable only sends up Pacific), and that the channel organisation is less logical, the channels she watches used to be in 2 distinct groups, they're now all over the channel map (a legacy of analog cable), I had to set up favorites list so she can find her channels. She's also peeved that we can't get PPV.

Basically that's my view, the TiVo is pretty much the same, the signal is different.

My wife is fine with our new TiVo! However, unfortunately a compromise had to be made and there is now a season pass for Oprah :(

I think that is a small price to pay for the OK on spending $800+ :)

It's at the bottom the priority list right? (And I don't want to see the suggestions list when there's an SP for Oprah! :)

Yeah, its at the bottom of the Season Pass list! That is a good suggestion about the SD, my only concern is that the wife may notice that oprah does not fit in a 4x3 aspect ratio. Hehe!

Here's our discussion, maybe you can tell me if my "no's" are wrong.

Me:Hey, Hon, the the S3 is out and it does HD!
Wife: Cool! How much is it?
Me: $800
Wife: wow, that's alot, what else can it do?
Me: record 2 shows at the same time, in HD.

Wife:Will it still work with the slingBox
Me: Yup!

Wife: Cool, can I listen to my music you have saved on the server?
Me: No

Wife: Can I transfer shows to the old TiVo?
Me: No

Wife: Can I transfer the saved shows you have on the server, to the new one?
Me: No

Wife: Can I copy shows to the server and then to another Tivo or my computer?
Me: No

Wife: Can I still listen to Sirius, through the TiVo, like it does now?
Me: No

Wife: Can watch my pictures that I take with my camera, like it does now?
Me: No

Wife: Will it do that Galleon thing that shows shows me the weather and other stuff?
Me: No

Wife: Is it faster than the old TiVo, cause the menu's, on the old one, are really slow now.
Me: Don't know, I have heard things that it is slow sometimes.

Wife: How come it isn't as good as the old one?
Me: Cause of legal reasons, and no one is sure if it will ever do those things.

Wife: Do you get a discount, since we have had Tivos for over 7 years and have 4 right now?
Me: No

Wife: Is it going to come down in price soon?
Me: Probably depends on the sales numbers.

Wife: Sounds like it doesn't do anything like the old one can, so they probably won't sell very well and the price will drop once everyone finds out what they are missing. Also, it sounds like TiVo doesn't care about their long time customers or making it better than the old one. So maybe we should wait.
Me: ya, maybe

I don't believe that conversation DaddyBC.

My own experience suggests women have different priorities than men when it comes to their Tivo. Perhaps your wife is an exception and actually uses the Tivo to increase the time and energy they spend with TV, PC, and other gadgets.

My own experience suggests women have different priorities than men when it comes to their Tivo.

She has been using a TiVo for 7 years and is married to a "techie" kinda guy, that sets it all up for her.

She has no idea how everything works, so I make it easier for her to "remember" how to do things. it's all in the setup.
For example, If all she is in the living room and wants to see what is recorded in the bedroom, all she has to do is click on "Bedroom DVR" to see what's there, grab whatever she wants and watch it. No "thinking" required, or having to remember anything.
Same with the other stuff. Whenever I setup anything I keep in mind that I need to make it easy for her and the kids.

But they are not stupid, In fact, if you could see her doing house work while slinging Sirius, or recorded music, from the TiVo to her Axim in audio only mode, with her headphones on, while I watch football on the bigscreen, you would see, how easy I make it for her. :o

DaddyBC,

Ok, I believe you. :) However, as the previous poster suggested, several of your answers were incorrect. For example, the Series3 does support viewing and playback of pictures and music from your computer.

Wife: Can I watch HD tivo through the old one?
Me: Nope. But who cares, you can watch all the SD TV you want until the price comes down.

Wife: It's a good thing I'm more techie than you, you wuss!
Me: Yah, you want some stuff I've never even heard of! I guess since you are far more technical than the average guy, you won't mind using the cable co DVR for your HD content. I wish my girlfr... I mean most guys I know don't have wives with your technical saavy. I'm so lucky!

Wife: Hey, I know, let's get one of those new Blue-ray HD DVD players. They are $999, but I heard Toshiba is offering a discount since we already have 3 Toshiba SD DVD players.
Me: Nah, I'll stick with Tivo. Thanks anyway, hon!

My wife's lovin' it because before she would have to change inputs to watch HD vs. SD cable, and she'd have to change inputs to watch OTA HD. Of course, she never did that and just watched everything in SD. Now it's all seamless.

Agreed. Mine is still WAY faster then my Sony or my series 2.

My wife only wanted to know why I waited so long to buy it. She was tired of missing parts of her favorite shows (we had an SA 8300 in addition to our two Series 2 boxes), and needing to hit rewind after fast forwarding through commercials.

My wife and I are in one accord as to the S3. Too much money for a crippled device. We both want an HD set that allows MRV to S2 boxes in the house at a minimum. The 800.00 entry price is just icing on the NO cake.

Friday I bought a S2 DT with a one year deal for $49.00. She's already making plans to put cooking shows on the old one we are moving to the Computer Room/Kitchen. (They are adjacent, so we are splitting the signal from the TiVo to show on two sets.)

I could see MRV happening between S3s in the future, but it seems to me that MRV between an S3 and S2 box would present some challenges.

I could be barking up the wrong tree... but I don't believe an S2 would natively be able to playback an S3-recorded HD transport stream. That means it would have to be transcoded before it could be sent to an S2, and that would require serious processing. It would be much more involved that just transporting the file across the network.

I could be wrong, that's just the way I see it.

Naturally HD content would have to stay on the S3, or S3's as the case may be. But SD should be transferrable between S2's and S3's. Basically in order to bridge the transition for those with S2's TiVo is going to have to find a way to bring those features to an HD box, even if it means removing Cable Card support and only allowing unencrypted QAM and ATSC.

In our house, the wife (me) is in charge of the Audio/Visual setup. My husband just goes along with what I do. I have to consult him for major purchases, and he wasn't thrilled about the cost of the S3. But we are frequently early adopters, and it's been years since we upgraded the Tivo. And we were due!!!

BTW, I'd been holding out for HD until now, and I was just waiting for the S3 to make it happen. And I am WAY impressed! I was half afraid that the HD wouldn't be that much better than SD. My husband is also very impressed with it. So it's a winner all around.
