... I can't figure out why I need an image of the tivo software in order to upgrade to a new, larger hard drive.

I'm upgrading my tivo and my friends one while i'm at it.. I need to backup my hacks/season passes etc but on my friends one its just a clean install... sooo I'm guessing here that I will follow the instructions from Steve Conrad's excellent guide (http://www.steveconrad.co.uk/tivo/upgrade3.html) in order to do my upgrade, but do i need to follow a different path in order to do my friends? I have the image file ready and waiting (i'm sure I used that the last time I upgraded my hard drive, again i didnt back up any hacks or anything that time), but the only guides I can see make use of the MFSTools2 and not the image...

Can someone give me a quick heads up as to the way to go

For your friends you still need a valid back up as all the system software is needed for Tivo to do anything. If you're going to end up with a clean installation for your friend you should just follow the same steps back up his/her vanilla image and restore the image to the new larger drive.
You could use your backup and then do a "clear and delete everything" from Tivo once you have the drive back in your friend's machine if that saves you some time.

Personally if I had the opportunity to get a vanilla backup then I would. I sometimes think I might like to start again setting up season passes, thumbs etc. from scratch when I eventually replace my disk.

I thought the image that I have is the tivo system software aswell, no? So I dont need the image at all?

I don't have my friends tivo itself, I just have a new 250gb drive that I am going to setup for him so I can just give it to him put in his tivo in place of his old 40gb drive.

Youy are correct that the image you have includes the TiVo software, and that this is required for a clean install.

Just restore your image to his drive using an LBA48-aware boot CD and then run copykern to copy the kernel and intialise the swap.

I used my backup from the current tivo drive, and installed onto both new hard drives (one for me, one for my friend). On his one I put in my tivo and did a "clear and delete all", and then stuck my new drive in, and all's good.
Yay, more recording time for me....
